Lunghi wins Giro del Friuli

Colpack's Denish Lunghi has won the 27th edition of the Giro del Friuli, held over 200 kilometres. He finished alone, 10 seconds in front of Guido Trenti (Cantina Tollo), Ellis Rastelli (Liquigas), and Alexandre Moos (Phonak).

The race was marked by an escape of 34 riders on San Giorgio Montenars (409 m), with 20 kilometres to go. This group built a massive lead on the next peloton, which inlcude the likes of Basso and Rebellin. Lunghi made his final attack with 2 kilometres to go, and won by 10 seconds.

Only 27 of the 134 starters finished the race, which was held at an average speed of nearly 44 km/h. Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno), racing for the first time in Italy for quite some time, abandoned after 140 km.
