Scott Sunderland (Malaysia Airlines) overcame sickness and jet lag to win the hardest stage of the 50th Herald Sun Tour, a 180 kilometre journey from Lakes Entrance to Mt Hotham. Although he lost far too much time in stage 3 to be in contention for the overall classification, he found his climbing legs today to beat Polish rider Zbigniew Piatek (Echuca-Moama) in a two man sprint, with Piatek's teammate Piotr Chmielewski finishing third at 1'09.
The overall lead changed again, with Austrian Peter Wrolich (Ballarat*Eureka!), who finished 11th in the stage, taking over from Remigius Lupeikis (Echuca-Moama). Australian champion Steve Williams (NSWIS) moved into second overall, 34 seconds behind Wrolich.
The stage was characterised by 10 climbs, including two category one hills. On the first of these, Sunderland sent his Danish teammate Jorgen Bo Petersen away in a break with Eric Wohlberg to force the other teams to chase. Petersen soon lost Wohlberg, but unfortunately for him there was no feeding except directly from the cars, and as the next group was less than a minute behind, his team car wasn't allowed to assist.
Sunderland took matters into his own hands when he attacked at the base of the final climb of Mt Hotham, quickly catching Petersen's group, which was suffering by this stage. Behind Sunderland, two Polish riders, Zbigniew Piatek and Piotr Chmielewski, were attempting to close the 15-20 second gap into the strong headwind. Sunderland held them off for a while before deciding that the three of them would better off working together, and the junction was made.
Chmielewski couldn't hold on though, and it was left to Sunderland and Piatek to fight it out for the stage. Sunderland had no problems in beating his breakaway companion in the sprint at the top of the climb.
It was a satisfying win for the experienced Australian, whose ambitions on the overall GC were destroyed after a stomach upset two days ago caused him to miss both breaks that went, to finish over 23 minutes behind. "Getting over the bronchitis has not been easy," he told Cyclingnews after the stage. "I still have trouble breathing as my sinuses block up all the time. The cough hasn't completely gone yet either and the bad weather hasn't made it easier to get over the jet-lag. The boys in the team have been jet-lagged very badly actually until today."
"This was the first day I had good legs; I feel better now. On top of things, I had diarrhoea the first days; probably because my stomach didn't have any favourable bacteria anymore after the heavy course of antibiotics. To say I was having a bad time is an understatement. "
"But all that to the side; I'm very happy with this one. This stage is the nicest one to win. It's been a hard day. It definitely was more my kind of racing today, a longer, tougher stage. I'm not a criterium rider."
"Of course the general classification is messed up for the favourites, after the long breakaway the other day. But most of the European riders, with exception of the Polish guys, are tired and it's been a long season for the ones coming out right after the World Championships. I think we'll have to let the criterium riders do their thing in the days to come. Maybe at the end of the week there are a couple of stages which suit me better."
Brian Farrell took these pics of the stage.
