Mattan bags another big win

Nico Mattan (Cofidis) has won the 88th Giro Piemonte, the follow up race to yesterday's Milano-Torino. The Belgian denied Saeco another win as he beat Fabio Sacchi in the sprint, with Matthé Pronk (Rabobank) taking third. Only 17 riders finished within the time limit of the race.

Unlike yesterday which saw attacks from beginning to end, after just 20 kilometres of racing today, a group of 17 got away that would never be caught: Nico Mattan and Chris Peers (Cofidis), Fabio Sacchi (Saeco), Matthé Pronk (Rabobank), Michael Rogers and Luca Paolini (Mapei), Mauro Radaelli (Tacconi Sport), Oscar Pozzi (Fassa Bortolo), Eladio Jimenez (iBanesto.com), Paolo Valoti and Alexandre Shefer (Alessio), Nicki Sorensen (CSC Tiscali), Jorg Jaksche and David Arroyo (O.N.C.E.), Raivis Belohvosciks (Lampre), Domenico Romano (Ceramiche Panaria), and Corrado Serina (Alexia).

The group covered over 50 kilometres in the first hour, and by kilometre 93 (Cremosina) they had a 12'40 lead and there was still no reaction from the peloton. Eladio Jimenez (iBanesto) tried a solo move after 112 kilometres, staying away for 22 km until he was recaptured. The main group had fallen to 18 minutes behind while the leaders were still averaging 44.3 km/h.

At that point (km 135), race director Carmine Castellano decided to stop the race for the 'chasers', due to safety concerns over keeping the road closed. Thus, only 17 riders arrived in Domodossola for three 12 km circuits. On the first of these, Jaksche attacked with Rogers and Shefer setting off in pursuit. With two laps to go, the German held a 6 second lead on his two pursuers, with the peloton at 24 seconds. The three joined forces on the second lap, but only had 5 seconds lead on the group as they crossed the finish line for the second last time.

Belohvosciks was the first to bridge up, followed by the rest of the riders, although Serina and Arroyo were dropped. At the finish it was Mattan who found the legs to win the sprint in front of Sacchi, to record another big win this year following the GP Plouay.
