Track Season Begins with Promise

by Craig Eiszele

The Regional Road Championships were conducted last weekend and with the end of the road season, the track season on the Gold Coast has well and truly started. Almost 70 riders raced at the Geoff Reardon Velodrome, Nerang, last Friday night. There is a new found enthusiasm, with not only local trackies, but riders from as far afield as Warwick, Ipswich and Brisbane.

With this new found enthusiasm for track racing, the Madison event has been re-introduced and is run on a fortnightly basis. The "Mike’s Bikes Madison Series" has thrown down the challenge to riders from Brisbane and elsewhere to see if anyone can match the skills and speed of local riders.

Brisbane riders Tim Chiverton and Nathan Seage (both 19) took the challenge up to all the other competitors at the Inaugural event last week. They won by a single point with all other teams on the same lap, bar one.

The Madison is the event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics that Australians Scott McGrory and Brett Aitken won gold medals.

The local team from "Mike’s Bikes", represented by former New Zealand Champion, Jeff Harris and ex Victors Rider, Pat Blannin, are keen for a win after making some costly mistakes last week. Another team from the Gold Coast Goldstars Club have paired up to take the Madison head on. Australian Junior Jon Cantwell will pair with Qld Track Rider Jayson Austin.

Support racing starts at 7.00pm while the Madison is scheduled for 8.00pm.
