Matt Bottrill (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) won the final national leg of the season-long RTTC - Rudy Project Time Trial Series at Windermere, in the Lake District. Postponed from its early season date because of the Foot-and-Mouth disease outbreak in Cumbria, the Booths Supermarket Grand Prix over 25.7 miles was won by Bottrill with a time of 1.00.12.
Early rain and low cloud around Lake Windermere made for wet conditions calling for great care on the corners and downhill runs. Just 14 seconds slower than Bottrill was runner-up Gethin Butler (Preston Wheelers), still recovering from his record breaking ride from Land's End to John O'Groats.
Butler, who has won the Circuit of Windermere seven times in nine rides, admitted he lacked speed after his record ride. "If I had been able to get some fast training miles in I might have done better, but I haven't had the energy to do too much for the last couple of weeks," Butler said.
It was the first time that Bottrill and third-placed Julian Ramsbottom (Pete Read Racing) had ridden the Windermere event and both plan to return. "The £1,500 prize list is a big incentive," Bottrill said.
