The Brisbane Broncos Cycling Club made a clean sweep of every event at the Friday night track racing held at the Gold Coast Cycling Centre, Nerang.
The Broncos took first place in every grade of the support racing. The pairing of Broncos Tim Chiverton (19) and Gold Coast Bronco Nathan Seage (19) took out the inaugural running of the Mike's Bikes Madison with a score of 24 points. Fellow Broncos Gilbert Gutowski and James Schneider came in a very close second place with a score of 23 points. Third place on 15 points was the Gold Coast Goldstars pairing of veterans Tim Francis and Les Heap.
Track cycling has undertaken a recent resurgence on the Coast with an initiative of the Gold Coast Goldstars Cycling Club to incorporate a Madison event into the program of regular Friday Night Track racing. With sponsorship from Mike's Bikes the event is guaranteed to run until the Gold Coast Wheelrace and Madison Carnival on the 22nd December 2001.
The Madison was made popular by the success of Australians Scott McGrory and Brett Aitken at the recent Olympic Games in Sydney. They both won a Gold medal for their efforts in the Madison.
The Madison is on every fortnight at the Gold Coast Cycling Centre, Hope Street, Nerang and is available to spectators free of charge. Support racing starts at 7.00pm with the next Madison scheduled for 8.00pm Friday, October 26.
