George from Keighley, and Wakefield's Whittaker collected the silver and bronze medals respectively in this thirty to thirty-four age category. 35 - 39 age group Wikus Esterhuizen won a three up sprint to take his first title at the World Masters. Esterhuizen from South Africa out paced Australia's Peter Barnard and David Robson from Great Britain to take gold in 11.804 seconds. Barnard and Robson collected the silver and bronze medals respectively. Men's Points Race45 - 49 age group Andy Laing gained a popular victory in the Points Race. The forty-seven year old from West Lothian along with America's Scott Porter from Dallas, Texas and Manchester's James Rutherford lapped the field to secure the medals. Laing made sure of his win with three sprint victories and places in another two to collect twenty-two points, six more than Porter. Rutherford was just two behind for the bronze. 50 - 54 age group Danny Clark showed just why he has the title of "King of the Six Days" when he gave a superb demonstration to win the Points crown. Clark from Queensland, Australia dominated the race, winning all but one of the six sprints. This gave him a final score of thirty-three, 17 more than the defending champion, Ian Hallam from Waterlooville. The bronze medal went to the American Patrick Gellineau with a final score of twelve. Women's Pursuit30 - 34 age group Melanie Szubrycht completed a hat trick of victories when she won the 2000m Individual Pursuit. In the morning qualifying rides the thirty-four year old from Dinnington near Sheffield, established an age category world best time of 2.32.248 to shave 0.598 seconds off the figures set four years ago by Jens Evans of the USA. In the ride off for gold and silver the British competitor was half a second at the half way stage. Over the next four laps Szubrycht who represented England at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, applied the pressure to finish two and a half seconds ahead of Charlotte Hopkinson the defending champion from Skipton. Sally Boyden the thirty-four year old former international competitor from Newport, Brough made it a clean sweep for Great Britain when she beat Michelle Enslin of South Africa, in the ride off for the bronze medal in this thirty to thirty-four age group. Boyden's time of 2.42.213 finishing nearly three seconds ahead. 35 - 39 age group Annette Hanson had to work hard to win the 2000m Individual Pursuit. Emily Forde, the thirty-seven year old from Edinburgh, set the early pace. At the half way stage the British competitor was almost one and a half seconds. But Hanson, thirty-nine years old from Kirkland, USA started to reel her opponent in. She then turned the deficit into an advantage winning by one and half a seconds in 2.35.403. The ride off the bronze medal in this age category for thirty-five to thirty-nine year olds was just as close. Britain's thirty-eight year old Jackie White from Crewe was up at the 1,000m mark. America's Carla Koehler one year the junior, took control on the second half to win in 2.43.061 just 0.773 seconds ahead. 40 - 44 age group Auriel Forrester established a World Best Time in the morning heats of the 2000m Individual Pursuit and then added the title during the evening session. The forty-three year old from Dunstable rocketed to a 2.36.831 to shave 1.411 seconds off the World Best Time she set just twelve months ago at last year's championships. In the final, Australian Vicki-Lynne Birks was bested by her British rival. Forrester caught her after just 2.02.519 of the race. The race for the third place in this event for riders forty to forty-four, was an all-British affair with Karen Byrne forty-two from Stoke-on-Trent, edging out Julie Hill from Littleborough, Lancashire. Bryne's time of 2.42.615 for the bronze medal, was just over ahead one second ahead. 45 - 49 age group Marion Bax turned her bronze of the previous evening into gold in the 2000m Individual Pursuit. Having finished third in the Sprint, Bax was hungry for more success and gave her rival no chance. The forty-five year old from Bavel, covered the twelve laps in 2.46.161 finishing nearly three seconds ahead of Britain's Glynis Francis, the forty seven year old from Manchester. In the ride for the bronze medal, Linelle Betts from California recorded 2.48.096 to beat her Britain's Evelyn Kenyon the forty-seven year old from Wigan, by over one second. 50+ age group Josie Heffernan kept up the family tradition when she pedalled her way to victory in the 2000m Individual Pursuit. The fifty-year old mother of two from Beaconsfield, had a tough battle with Jeanette Traver, from Irvine, California. In the end, Heffernan had the upper hand and won by one second in 2.54.699. In the ride off for the bronze it was a great tussle between South Africa's Janet Moss and Val Rushworth from Great Britain. First Moss was going for a hat trick of victories having already won the Sprint and Time Trial events. Rushworth, the older by some twelve years, clawed her way back and went into the lead. But over the final lap of this eight lap race for competitors fifty plus, Moss had the extra speed pulling ahead to win by just 0.146 seconds in 2.55.743. Photography
