Estonian sprinter Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2r-Prevoyance) has won the first stage of the Giro della Provincia di Lucca, 173 km from Lucca to Pisa. Kirsipuu outsprinted Italians Moreno Di Biase and Alberto Ongarato, both riding for Mobilvetta.

The otherwise unexciting stage was highlighted by an escape of Andrea Tafi (Mapei), who attacked after 6 kilometres and stayed away for 121 kilometres, being caught with 46 kilometres to go. Perhaps it was to impress national selector Franco Ballerini, who named the Italian World Championships team recently without his former teammate Tafi.

However, this didn't prevent the sprinters' teams from taking charge today, and the pace was controlled for the remainder of the stage into Pisa. Only Scarselli (Selle Italia) managed to get away, but his lead was never more than 36 seconds and he was caught with 22 km to go. Jaan Kirsipuu easily beat Di Biase and Ongarato in the sprint.

Tomorrow's second stage is from Altopascio to Capannori, over 198 kilometres.
