MTB World Cup #2 - CDMSarentino, Italy, May 12-13, 2001Program
Day 1 - May 12: Time Trial qualifications (M/W)Fullana and Martinez grab pole positionsBy Alessandro Gretter They were the pre-race favourites and they didn't wait so long to jump to the top of the podium. Spaniard Marga Fullana and Frenchman Miguel Martinez dominated the Time Trial race held in Sarentino, the second round of the Tissot World Cup. The one-lap race really showed who were the best in this sport. Sarentino's race is very difficult, characterised by a 6.32 km long lap with 380 m of climbing, and some technical passages like the "Hoelle" (say "Hell") - a 30% slope drawn in the woodland and the stones. There was also a strong wind to slow the pace of the bikers today. But Olympic and World Champion Miguel Martinez didn't feel any of these difficulties. He took only 13'40"88 to cover the lap distance and put 10 seconds into the Canadian Roland Green, 14 to Dutchman Bas Van Dooren and 18 to Italian Marco Bui, leader of the 'Time Trial Cup'. Far behind finished the other riders including Tissot World Cup leader, Hermida (44 seconds lost for him) and local hero Hubert Pallhuber. More evident was the superiority of Spaniard Marga Fullana in the female race. The Specialized World Champion left teammate, Swiss Barbara Blatter, 22 seconds behind and surpringsly beat Italian Annabella Stropparo by about half a minute. It was a bad performance for Canadian Chrissy Redden, winner in Napa Valley, who finished in 16th position. On the stage, but not on the bike, Olympic Champion Paola Pezzo dressed in a gold-black suit capable of attracting the attention of all the parterre. The day finished with a VIP race with mostly locals and German sporting heroes, like former WC Maurizio Fondriest and skier Sonja Nef, Hilde Gerg, Ole Einar Bjorndaelen and F1 driver Alexander.

May 13: Cross Country (M/W)World Champions Martinez & Fullana Romp at Sarentino World CupBy Tim Maloney, cyclingnews.com correspondent As Italians turned out to the polls in record numbers to vote to elect a new Prime Minister, reigning World MTB Cross Country champions Miguel Martinez (Full Dynamix) and Marga Fullana (Specialized) voted to show why they both deserved to wear the rainbow striped jersey in winning round 2 of the Tissot-UCI World Cup Cross Country on a pretty spring day in the mountains of Sarentino, Italy on Sunday. Both Martinez and Fullana dominated Saturday's 1 lap TT for starting grid position in Sarentino and once the races started on Sunday, it was clear that both world champions, who both won here in 2000, were out for the win on the tough new 6.5 km course. Fullana blasted up the switchbacked first climb, dropping her Specialized teammate Barbara Blatter, winner of last month's World Cup opener in Napa on the first of 4 laps. Like last year, Fullana never looked back and cruised to an easy win over Blatter. Martinez had pretty much the same game plan as Fullana at Sarentino, but he had a lot more competition. On the first of 7 times up the switchbacks, Mig attacked and blew the race apart and only 6 others could maintain contact; World Cup leader, Jose Antonio Hermida (Bianchi-Motorex), Bas Van Dooren and Filip Meirhaeghe (Specialized), Roland Green (Trek-VW), Bart Brentjens (Giant) and Marco Bui (Marin-Helly Hansen). Van Dooren made a break on the second lap but was reeled in after a lap of freedom. The front group rode hard for 5 laps but heading down some tricky hairpin turns, Van Dooren dumped hard, blocking the other riders...except emerging Canadian powerhouse Green. The rangy British Colombian squeezed by the downed Dutchman and blasted away into the lead. With one lap to go through the start-finish in Sarentino village, the Trek-VW man had almost a half-minute gap on the now reduced chasers of Martinez, his ex-team mate and arch rival Bui and the double Dutch duo of Brentjens and Van Dooren. No one was helping Martinez chase Green much, but Mig was not worried. His coach Paolo Rosola had told him to keep calm and make his move on the last climb. And move he did as the rainbow jersey clad Full Dynamix man attacked hard at the base of the climb and quickly dumped the others. When Martinez is motivaed, he is almost unstoppable as he showed today. Green made a valliant effort but martinez pulled back 20 seconds on the climb and descended like a demon on his hardtail to pull back the Trek-VW rider on his full suspension bike with 2km to go. After a bit of road-race style jockeying, Martinez then showed Green and the roaring crowd why he is simply the best mountain biker on the planet with a thrilling sprint win. Repeats one year laterBy Alessandro Gretter The Tissot World Cup #2 could be explained in this way. Spaniard Marga Fullana and Frenchman Miguel Martinez were the dominators in the 2000 edition and, as they did on Saturday when they won the TT, they doubled their victory in Sarentino. The long day of racing started in the early morning with the Junior race won by the Norwegian Lars Petter Nordhaug and the German Nina Gohl. At 10:30 it was WC time, with the first race being the Women's cross country. 70 bikers were at the start and after the launch-lap, the bunch was led by Italian Annabella Stropparo (Be-one Team). Marga Fullana closed the gap on the first ascent and both were joined by WC leader Barbara Blatter, the German Sabine Spitz and American Alison Dunlap. These five led the race together for another lap, then world champion Fullana accelerated just before entering the single-track section of the parcours. She easily increased her advantage on the chasers, with Swiss Barbara Blatter 20 seconds behind and a half a minute on Dunlap. On the descent and in the flat part, Fullana's pace grew and on the final lap Blatter was 50" behind, Dunlap with a minute and a half, Spitz and Stropparo about 2 minutes. Nothing happened in the final lap and at the finish Fullana won with 1'14" on teammate Blatter, who keeps the Tissot World Cup Jersey, 2'23" behind was Alison Dunlap who resisted the Spitz late-charge. Fifth position for the local Annabella Stropparo (when the Italians still miss "Golden Girl" Paola Pezzo) and a good performance for Mary Grigson and Caroline Alexander, who finished 7th and 8th. Thousands of "MTB lovers" arrived for the men's race and placed themselves in the spectacular "double-S" in the woodlands and in the breath-taking descent of the "Hoelle" (say "Hell"). 180 were at the start and after the launch the race was led by Italian Mauro Bettin, a teammate of Miguel Martinez, followed by Marco Bui. After half a lap, Canadian Ryder Hesjedal made a break and gained 20 metres on Martinez and Bui, with Dutchman Brentjens a bit behind. At the bottom of the descent twelve bikers were in the lead: Martinez, Brentjens, Green, Bui, Van Dooren, Meirhaege, Pallhuber, Acquaroli, Evans, Absalon, Hanisch and WC leader Hermida. The situation remained quite stable for most of the race, someone were discharged from the leading bunch but with 2 laps to go there were still 7 men in the lead. In the downhill tract, Green took a little advantage and increased it on the flat part. On the final lap he had 15 seconds on Bui, Van Dooren, Brentjens and Martinez. The Frenchman didn't try too hard to close the gap but caught Green fairly quickly. Martinez tried many times to leave the Canadian behind, but the Trek rider was still able to keep his pace. At the finish, Martinez found the right route and anticipated Green, who was beaten by 3 seconds. On the podium Dutchman Bart Brentjens, 22 seconds behind, who preceded Bas Van Dooren and Italian Bui. Sixth position for WC leader, Spaniard Hermida, a minute behind. A great perfomance for Volvo Cannondale leader, Cadel Evans who finished 7th. Just passed the finish, Martinez' joy exploded. "I'm very happy! Sarentino is one of my two seasonal targets, and I got it! The next one will to be confirm myself in the World Championships. I must thank my team Full Dynamix for all the support and I dedicate this victory to all my squad and my teammates." A bit of delusion in Green's eyes. "I was in a great condition. I thought it was my time to win in the World Cup, but the others in the leading bunch organised a good chase on the flat part. At the beginning of the final ascent, I arrived with few seconds advantage and Martinez was on me. I followed him, but he was great ... and in the final I was KO. No problem, next time will be my time!".
