LVRC Region 7 - King of the Bowl, Race 5

Milton Keynes, May 29, 2001

Report

On a warm, sunny evening at the Milton Keynes Bowl last night, the riders found themselves racing among the debris of the weekend's Ozzfest Concert, on the inner circuit with an additional chicane behind the stage. New faces are still appearing as the season 'warms up' with last years senior champion Dave Benger (Aylesbury C.C.) re-appearing along with Rob Chaundy and ex first category roadman Bob Thomson both from the Milton Keynes Cycling & Triathlon Club.

Ian Cooper (Bicester Millennium) was the first to attack from the ABC race and enjoyed a couple of laps of freedom before he was bought to book by Joe Quill (Milton Keynes Cycling & Triathlon Club). Meanwhile in the DEF race Dave Benger had escaped the bunch along with this years early leader Bob Richards (Nene Valley RT) and were chasing the lack lustre ABC group. The ABC riders were not organised at all with small 'attacks' breaking up any rhythm. Ben Justin (Nene Valley RT) was next to try his hand and was soon joined by Quill and Bob Varney (Team Corley Cycles). Justin was soon dropped but it was not long before Quill and Varney had been absorbed back into the bunch.

The hardworking Benger and Richards were gradually reeling in the ABC riders and made contact after about 25 minutes racing. This was the signal for Varney to put the pressure on, stringing out the group for a lap and shedding some of the weaker riders. The pace dropped momentarily before Varney attacked again and finally enjoyed some freedom from the group, one lap later, Bob Thomson (Milton Keynes Cycling & Triathlon Club) making a comeback to racing after a successful early season Training Camp in Majorca, jumped away form the group and gradually bridged across to Varney.

With Varney and Thomson working well together they quickly reeled in the remainder of the DEF riders and any dropped ABC riders and only Ron Day (North Bucks RC) could hang on. The race was un-fortunately neutralised for a lap to allow a large lorry to to exit the site but re-started with the same time gaps between the groups.

The re-started race followed the same pattern and with five laps to go the DEF race was between Benger and Richards and the ABC race between Thomson and Varney, with the others racing for third. At the bell the situation was the same and one lap later Benger had enjoyed a successful return to this season's series beating Richards comprehensively in the sprint. The ABC sprint was a much closer affair with Varney squeezing between a lapped rider to his left and Thomson to his right to win by half a wheel. Ron Day hung on to gain third in the DEF race with Rob Chaundy gaining the verdict in the ABC sprint for third.
