The type of weather we can look forward to during the coming winter months. Ah, Queensland! The A Grade race had barely begun before Crackles Cahill was off the front and looking like his goal was to lap the field. However as the halfway mark approached the bunch got serious, and within 15 minutes they were all back together again. Then began a series of solo attacks, first by Mark Laspina, followed by his team mate River Rain. Eventually Rain got off the front and stayed clear, winning from Laspina and the consistent Greg Pooley. Paul Howard and Craig Reston were in an aggressive mood in B Grade, and five minutes into their race they were off the front and increasing their lead every lap. By 40 minutes they had lapped the field, and in the two up sprint for first and second Reston slipped away with 500 metres to go and won comfortably. Denis Cain continued his impressive form in C Grade, attacking on the hill on the last lap to win clearly from John Mildenhall and Des Thompson, Frank Schirmer was too fast in the D Grade sprint, and Vince Nucifora outsprinted last week's E grade winner Greg Walters. This weeks race was run over the Bald Mountain course. The 55 kilometres of this course take riders from Dulguigan out through Chillingham to the foot of Bald Mountain and then over to Numinbah before returning back through Chillingham. Whilst the road climbs gradually out to Chillingham there are a number of short and steep hills after here which can make for interesting racing especially as the return leg of the journey is pretty much down hill most of the way back to the finish line. There were 9 riders in A Grade this week who set about their race at a quick pace. All were together until just past Chillingham when Robert Lyte (Murwillumbah) managed to get clear of his fellow riders. Rob set about his afternoons work diligently which saw him stay away until the finish. Second home in a sprint finish was Brendan Egan from Murwillumbah with Craig Cahill from CATS in third place. B Grade had a good field of 13 riders who also set about their race with gusto! Despite the fast pace this group basically kept together to set up a sprint finish for this event. First across the line was Andrew 'sit on' Blackmore from Murwillumbah with the consistent Graham Harvey (also Murwillumbah) in second spot and Paul Howard (CATS) third home. A small field of just 6 riders lined up for the C Grade race. Although small in numbers this was a testing and tactical race which saw Sean Swain (Murwillumbah) break away just after Chillingham. Despite his best efforts Sean never got more than about a 150 metre lead over the other riders who reeled him in after Numinbah and then kept the race together until the finish line. First home was Joseph Lynch ahead of a fast closing Lindsay Smith (both Murwillumbah) with Ted Mathot form CATS in third place. Both D and E Grades combined for this week's race which gave them a group of 17 riders for this event. The pace was steady but constant which saw the field basically keep together throughout the race. Dave Toyer (Murwillumbah) stirred things up in the last few kilometres with a strong attack which saw him first into the home straight with a good lead. However the effort was just a little too much and Dave ran out of steam with just 200 metres to go! This saw the 'old fox' Frank Schirmer jump to take first place with Bruce Bridgeman second and a great ride by Stuart McPherson (E Grade) to snatch third spot. All of these riders are from the Murwillumbah Club. Racing next week is the monthly handicap event over the tough Tyalgum course. This month the race will be the complete circuit returning via Bray Park and North Arm Road instead of the out and back handicap events held so far this year. All riders should be early to register to assist the handicapper and the smooth running of this event. Carnegie Caulfield AFL Park KermesseWaverly, May 27, 2001 Carnegie Caulfield returned to the popular AFL Park venue this week for a 100km mass start kermesse style circuit race. The past few years have seen this type of racing at the nearby Sandown Car Racing track, but this year the dates available at that circuit did not suit the local racing calendar. The course used combines the Criterium circuit used over the past few seasons with the Crit course of yesteryear giving a technical 2.5km circuit with many left and right hand corners, a few hills, and plenty of wind! The mass start format saw riders in 4 Senior grades start together, with separate prizes for each grade after the completion of 40 laps by the leading A Grade riders. The field approached 100 riders for the first few laps, before the inevitable attacks and counter-attacks commenced. A dozen of the strongest A and B grade riders soon established a 200m break after half a dozen laps, and slowly increased their lead. The surging in the pack behind saw 3 main bunches form, with the remainder of the A and B grade riders finally getting into a smoother rhythm and leaving most of the C and D Grade riders behind. Approaching the 30 lap mark, the remains of the break had the main bunch in sight, before attacks from Barcelona Olympian Robert Crowe split the breakaway in two. Crowe and 3 others passed the bunch, picking up 2 more B Grade passengers in Shane Mills and Trevor Burridge. Super Vets Bruce Will and Geoff Whiter, the only 2 B Grade riders to stay with the original break, latched onto the bunch shortly afterwards. Being a lap up on all other B Grade riders, they had the first 2 places wrapped up, and with 3rd and 4th up the road, the pace dropped off in the main bunch and most riders were content to count down the laps to the finish. With 3 laps to go for the break, Crowe attacked again, and only James Taylor had the legs to respond. Another surge on the next lap, and Taylor could not counter, giving the popular Crowe his first win (despite a number of 2nd place finishes during this years Crit season) at the Park for a few years. Michael Gill lead home Ray Turner to claim the other podium position. The B Grade win went to Bruce Will, although the Veteran B Grade pair elected not to contest the finish amongst the bunch they had lapped. Trevor Burridge was too strong for Mills in their finish with the A Grade break to claim 3rd place. Only 2 C Grade riders were strong enough to stay with the bunch, and at the finish Under 17 rider Simon Clarke still had the legs to comfortably out sprint Melbourne based David Wilkinson of the Darwin Cycling Club. Danny Wetherley, after losing contact with the bunch earlier in the race, recovered well to rejoin the bunch with most of the C Grade riders as they were lapped. His 3rd place finish was commendable given that he proved to be a willing worker over the last dozen laps, when most of the A and B Grade riders were taking it easy. Newcomer Deb McCoy was a convincing winner of D Grade. The former Cross Country skier has been impressing many over the past few weeks since joining the Club, with her strength and enthusiasm on the regular Sunday morning training ride. She also did more than her share of turns after rejoining the main bunch, and certainly looks like she's been riding bikes a lot longer than a couple of months.. Fresh from a win in the Canberra 3 Day Tour in early May, Klayton Smith was just beaten by Anthony Spurgeon in the A Grade 36km event. Spurgeon's winning time was 53min 19sec with an average speed of over 40km/h. Third across the line was Randwick Botany rider Andrew Foggin. Twenty-three B Grades lined up for their 32km, 14-lap race. Tony Ianacito dominated the event making several breakaway attempts. The large group managed chase Ianacito down after each break. In one of the most spectacular finishes for some time at Heffron Park, the entire B Grade bunch sprinted for the last 300m, reaching speeds of over 60km/h. Ianacito won by half a bike length in a time of 46min 46sec. Jaysen Brenton came second and David Johansen, third. C Grade maintained a steady pace in their 28km race. The first 3 places where claimed by Randwick Botany riders. John Droz came first in a time of 47min 3sec, followed by Wayne Goold and Brad Lane. 36km/h was the average speed. Junior Luke Cridland (U15) worked hard to stay with the C Grade bunch and finished with the pack. Two junior riders where placed first and second in the D Grade, 20km event. David Jenkins-Flint (U17) won in a time of 35min 47sec with Liam Fletcher (U17 Manly Warringah) second. Herve Boutin was placed third. Richard Jenkins has been racing for only a few months and claimed first place, for the first time, in the E Grade 16km race. Jenkins winning time was 34min 21sec. The next rider home was Julia Guinan followed by junior Jonathon Cridland (U13). E Grade average speed was 28km/h.
