Darlington Park, Ormeau, Qld, May 20, 2001

A new course this weekend, a four kilometre circuit at the Darlington Park motor racing track at Ormeau, mid way between the Gold Coast and Brisbane. An 800 metre climb, a fast descent, a wide and smooth hot mix surface, a number of twists and turns, and race times doubled from our normal crit times, meant that riders would have their fitness and skills fully tested before the day was over.

The size of the A Grade field was disappointing, with only 18 on the start line, and that was whittled away even more as the race progressed, with only seven riders lasting the full two hours. Super vet Paul Wild attempted to steal the race with 30 minutes to go, but he was collared inside the last 10 minutes and finished out of a place. The finish line was 200 metres from the top of the climb and on the last lap Greg Pooley attacked as they crested the hill, with State Under 19 rep Daniel Newnham glued to his wheel. At the line only centimetres separated them, with Newnham getting the verdict from Pooley, with Leigh Palmer taking third.

B Grade had the largest field with 40 starters, and despite numerous attacks they stayed relatively intact for the first hour. With 30 minutes remaining Under 17 Adam Tully and Gavin Williams got away, and with Tully driving the break they were able to increase their lead by the finish, with Tully taking a convincing win.

Denis Cain was too strong once again in C grade, winning from Jerome Carrigan and Alan Mumford, while in D Grade Ted Brigham rode solo for the last 15 minutes to take a well deserved victory from Frank Newnham. Greg Walters, having his first race, was the E Grade winner beating Bill Phillips who has recently returned from Europe where he had the pleasure of watching son Jason riding with Team Coast. Bill looked the part too in his Team Coast outfit!

And the verdict on the new circuit? Overwhelming praise, with a few obvious comments about the toughness of the hill. We'll be back for more at Darlington Park on June 17!

Next week - Nerang Crits. For information on CATS racing, check the CATS web site

Caesar's Illawarra CC scratch races

Huntley, May 19, 2001

Taking into account that quite a few riders had ventured down to Moruya for the Eurobodalla Two Day Tour there was quite a reasonable turn out for the 41.5km scratch races at Huntley on the weekend.

With 13 riders in the A grade field it was shaping up as a good race. The favourites before the race were Scott Bradburn and Seth Collins. Both riders were closely marked in the early stages of the race but it was soon apparent that their early morning ride into the National Park had sapped quite a bit from their legs.

Frank Tortorici didn't really attack on the steep side of Marshall Mount he just upped the tempo and rode away from the bunch. Bradburn was the only rider capable of going with him. The two shared the work well and rode away form the bunch. They rode the next 28km in time trial mode with Tortorici winning the sprint. The bunch was led home by David Greening who claimed third.

The B grade race was almost an exact copy of the A grade race. Dave Russel and Josh Wall escaped on the same climb and also worked well together to get away from the bunch. At one stage the two had a gap of over a minute on the hard chasing bunch.

Russel proved too strong for his younger compatriot and won the sprint. The sprint for third place was the best sprint on the day with Jason Johnson and Mick Kejda going head to head. Kejda proved too quick and won by half a tyre.

Following his excellent ride the week before in the Goulburn leg of the Interclub series where he finished second to Patrick Delahunty, Alan McClelland backed up with another strong ride. McClelland and Russel Barwise were too strong for the other C grade riders and the sprint finish came down to the two of them. They were neck and neck all the way down the finishing straight until the last 20m when McClelland put his in front and recorded a good win.

Jeff Gray had a good ride back to take out third place. After a long break from the sport he is gradually getting his bike legs back.

Teegan Makowski had another win in D grade, just out sprinting a very determined Max Baker. Baker is showing good form in the lead up to next week's Ken Dinnerville Memorial handicap

Next Saturday's race is a 37.5km handicap race with prize money, group 3 to provide the marshals.

Murwillumbah Amateur CC RR

Nobby's Creek, May 19, 2001

Racing this week was over the testing Nobbys Creek course. This takes riders from the start/finish at Dulguigan (just north of Murwillumbah) out through Chillingham to the foot of the Border Ranges before returning to the finish via Nobbys Creek.

There are a total of 10 short but steep hills spread over the 55 kilomtres of this course and these often determine the outcome of the race especially as the last 4 hills are encountered within the final 15 kilometres of the course.

A small but determined Group of A Grade riders stayed together for their race. The fast pace of this event saw the lead vehicle almost being overtaken by the riders on some of the down hill sections despite desperate attempts by the driver to make it go faster! This race ended in a bunch sprint.

B Grade also managed to keep together for the race with constant attacks from a number of riders. The pace of this event was also high and again ended in a bunch sprint despite the efforts of the group.

The C Grade race saw one of the riders, Stuart Ellick, run off the road after only 5 kilometres as he was apparently having a quiet daydream! Not to be left behind he scrambled back to the bunch and eventually finished in fifth place. Attacks featured prominently in this event with Robert Pomme getting clear of the bunch in Nobbys Creek. Despite a brave effort he was caught again back on the flats with about 3 kilometres to go which set the race up for a sprint finish.

D Grade had a large group for their race which included three women - Sandra Bury, Gail Zinn and Michelle Ede. Unfortunately Sandra had a mechanical problem after Chillingham but both Gail and Michelle rode extremely well to keep with the group as it was slowly reduced in numbers through the hills. Not to be outdone Michelle was first going into the last corner but ran wide which opened up the finish for a number of other riders.

A strong attack in the hills after Chillingham saw three riders go clear in the E Grade race. These riders built up a strong lead over the remaining 35 kilometres and were never threatened in the run for the finish line.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club Road Race

Heffron Park, Maroubra, May 19 2001

A scaled down racing program was conducted at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 19 May 2001 for the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club race meeting.

After passing coastal showers all morning, only a small number of riders registered. By race start time at 2.30pm the sun was shining and after an examination of the 2km course, the commissionaire decided to run a all-in, all- division 10 lap, 20km race, neutral until the `bell' lap. Only 3 lesser grade riders dropped from the bunch before the last lap race to the line. An exciting sprint followed with Ross Mackay, an A-Grader from Randwick Botany Club crossing the line first in a time of 34min 45sec. Second place went to Mark Wall from the Sutherland Cycling Club and Patrick Jones from Randwick Botany, third.

The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 26 May 2001. Juniors start at 1pm and Seniors 2.30pm.

Carnegie Caulfield Sonny Barnes Handicap

Modella, Saturday May 19, 2001

A good field of 90 braved the forecast and overcast skies for the second of Carnegie Caulfield's winter road races. The handicap format sees less strong riders given head starts over the Elite riders. The 9 rider “Limit” bunch had the luxury of a 32 minute advantage over the 16 “Scratch Men”, and the rest of the field were split into another 4 bunches between them. First rider over the line after the completion of the 2 lap 100km course is the winner.

The strong Scratch bunch had come agonizingly close to the winners over the same course two weeks before; the question on the spectators lips was would the mechanical demons which disrupted their rhythm be kinder this day?

Despite completing the course a full 3 minutes faster than the race before, the Scratch Men were never in the hunt. The Out-markers made good use of their lead, and the middle marks suffered from the absence of a number of regular competitors, including most of the place getters from the fortnight before.

The Limit riders lead the race for 80km, before the 19 and 23 minute bunches reeled them in. It seemed the winner would come from this bunch until Mark Windram took full advantage of a desperate attempt to bridge to the leaders by Andrew Shannon from the 14 minute bunch in the closing kilometers. Mark latched onto the move, and powered over the top to take the days big prize.

Realizing the futility of the Scratchmen's chase, Robert Tighello attacked the group 15km from home in an attempt to shake off riders who were no longer contributing to the chase. His move succeeded in thinning out the bunch, and with the help of ACR team mate and lead-out man James Taylor, he held off Brendan Rowbotham (Fitzroy Cycles) to claim the fastest time prize.
