Metaltek.co.uk & Arrow Signs road race

May 6, 2001

A £200 1st prize in theÊMetaltek.co.uk & Arrow Signs road race attractedÊmost ofÊthe top names in UK road racing. (40 elites). Racing started from the gun at Harby in the Vale of Belvoir. The peloton had split under the pressure from Julian Winn (WCU Private member) within three miles on the slopes of Harby hill. A lead group of seven was formed with Liam Killeen, Phil Dixon, James Cambridge, Matt BottrillÊprominent. This group grew to 15 by the time the prime hill was tackled again.

The strong winds prevented the main bunch from organising a concentrated effort to close the gap, which hovered between 30-45 seconds for two laps. During this time Julian Winn took three consecutiveÊprimes in theÊKing of the Mountains competitions piping Phil Dixon on each occasion. At the bell 25 riders had reformed in the lead group. Matt Bottrill made his dash for freedom (and for the £200 prize) but this came to nought as he was soon caught. The speed down the 3 mile straight of Long Lane never dropped below 35mph and it looked like the prime hill was to decide the victor. With the finish line just over the top of the climb it was a strong man's sprint. Kevin Dawson came out of the bunch to win clear from Winn, Tanner, Stephens and Killeen.

Local lad Mark Dawes (First 2nd cat) deserves a special mention for mixing it with this class field.

The Morning's support race was taken apart on the first climb by former member of the promoting Club Lee Wiggington (RAF CC) who now rides for his employer. His solo break gained a maximum advantage of 90 seconds and enabled him to win the king of the mountains title.

Wiggington was reeled in with half a lap to go. With 30 riders together for the final accent of Harby hill Liverpool Century team-mates Tim Brammeier and Chris Penketh took first and second respectively.
