Results and Reports for May 5-6, 2001USA - MTBPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews 24 Hours of Adrenalin Series, round 1 24 Hours of Adrenalin Series, round 1Monterey, California, May 5-6, 2001 Tinker Juarez dominates opening roundBy Chad Grenier This past weekend at Laguna Seca in sunny Monterey California, 650 mountain bike enthusiasts including 35 solo competitors gathered for the season opener of the 24 Hours of Adrenalin (tm) mountain bike team relay series. Tinker Juarez (Volvo/Cannondale), a two-time Olympian and three-time National Champion demonstrated his superior cycling abilities as he dominated the field. Tinker wowed the crowd by coming in first off the initial lap including the LeMans start. His strong performance sent a statement to the field that Tinker was here to win! This has only been done once before by Rishi Grewal (Klien) in the very first World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin Championships in 1999. If that wasn't enough, Tinker's second lap in 42:00:00 held the fastest lap record until a team competitor beat the time by 20 seconds. As the afternoon wore on and the laps went by Tinker continued to increase his lead over the field and he did not appear to tire. Nat Ross (Gary Fisher), fourth-place finisher at the 2000 World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin Championships broke the pack attempting to catch Tinker. As strong as Nat was, Tinker was much stronger and by the early hours of the morning Tinker had amassed a three-lap lead over Nat in second place. The remainder of the field was far behind. Tinker finished with 24 laps in 24:00:36 and was a true class act as he crossed the finish line and stated to everyone on the microphone, "You are all winners!" Nat Ross pushed hard but came up short and finished second with 23 laps in 24:19:15. Steve Fassbinder (Independent Fabrications) finished one lap behind Nat in 24:36:12. In the women's field Katie Lindquist (Moots), the 2000 World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin Champion rode strong completing 18 laps in 23:45:26, however she finished second behind Carrie Edwards of San Jose who completed 19 laps in 23:24:57. Tinker's success this weekend will most likely provoke Volvo/Cannondale and Tinker to participate at the 24 Hours of Adrenalin NORBA National Championships in August at Winter Park, August 4/5. As well he will likely have his sights set to take away the World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin Championship Title from Chris Eatough (TREK East Coast Factory Team) in Idyllwild, September 22/23 and a shot at a portion of the $20,000 cash purse. The top ten men and top three female solo competitors all qualified for the World Solo 24 Hours of Adrenalin Championships.
