Carnegie Caulfield Jack McGowan HandicapModella, May 5, 2001 A strong and eager field greeted the Handicappers for the first of Carnegie CaulfieldŐs road races for 2001. Named after long-serving past President Jack McGowan, the 100km race is run over two laps of a fairly flat and unsheltered course. Not a breath of wind promised a fast time, and the Scratch bunch faced a 30 minute deficit to the Limit bunch. The Scratchies task was not helped with mechanical failures causing the abandonment of race favourites Robert Tighello and James Taylor in the first lap, and Kristjan Snorrason in the closing stages (problems with Campagnolo 10 speed chains). It would be the Third Scratch bunch who would get up on the day. Starting only 8 minutes ahead of Scratch, and driven by renowned strongmen Bruce Will, Geoff Thomson, Dennis Bowen-Day and Geoff Whiter , they caught the remnants of the leading bunches with around 10km to go. Nearly 50 riders swarmed across the road at the finish, narrowly won by last yearŐs Sonny Barnes winner Anthony Comino ahead of Ian Smith and Mark Howard. The charging Scratchmen were lead home by Stephen Sansonetti a little over a minute later.
