6th Tour of Japan - 2.4Japan, May 20-27, 2001Main page Results Previous stage Stage 4 - May 25: Motegi: Twin Ring Motegi, 153.36 km Stafiej finally grabs a stageBy Miwako Sasaki* Polish rider Kazimierz Stafiej (Mroz) has won the 4th stage of 6th Tour of Japan, beating German Lars Teutenberg (Rigida DPX-Bianchi) in the final sprint. 81 riders started on the circuit course (12.38km x 12 laps + 4.8 km) at 9:30, normally used for Motor Sports in Motegi. The sky was clear, and the temperature was over 30 degrees on the course. At the first sprint with 9 laps to go, New Zealander Matthew Yates (older brother of Jeremy, Junior World Champion last year and also at this race) crossed first, ahead of Czech Michal Kalenda (Wustenrot-ZVVZ) and Spanish Guillem Munos (Rigida DPX-Bianchi). These three riders opened up a gap and continued to ride away for the next three laps. At the second sprint, at 6 laps to go, Yates also crossed first. He had gained 1 point in the Osaka stage, and therefore now had 11 points, so he got the yellow sprint jersey today. At 5 laps to go the three were caught by the peloton, which was moving fast in preparation for the finish. At the third sprint, with 3 laps to go, Japanese Koki Shinbo (Aisan Ind Racing Team) attacked, and Australian Josh Collingwood (Wustenrot-ZVVZ) and Guillaum Lauloux (St Quentin-Oktos) followed him. Collingwood quickly dropped out of the break, while Shinbo and Lauloux got 38 seconds at 2 laps to go. At this point, Stafiej and some other riders took off from the peloton and pursued the break. On the final lap, Stafiej and German Lars Teutenberg (younger brother of Sven (Festina)) took the lead. Stafiej is a teammate of race leader Pawel Niedzwiecki, and didn't work with Teutenberg making it easier for him to take the stage. It was second stage victory for Stafiej in the Tour of Japan (he won the Utsunomiya stage last year). He also finished 4th in stage 2, and 2nd in stage 3. He kept his blue points jersey and Niedzwiecki kept his green race leader's Jersey too. Tomorrow is the final mountain stage in Utsunomiya, the memorial circuit course of 1990 World Championship. *Miwako Sasaki is a journalist with Japanese Cycle Sport magazine Results1 Kazimierz Stafiej (Pol) Mroz-Supradyn Witaminy 3.39.41 2 Lars Teutenberg (Ger) Rigida DPX - Bianchi 3 Graeme Brown (Aus) Australian National Team 0.07 4 Pawel Niedzwiecki (Pol) Mroz-Supradyn Witaminy 5 Dirk Schumann (Ger) Rigida DPX - Bianchi 6 Massimo Apollonio (Ita) Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola 7 Adam Wadecki (Pol) Mroz-Supradyn Witaminy 8 Junichi Shibuya (Jpn) Team Bridgestone Anchor 9 Ronny Assez (Bel) Flanders-Prefetex 10 Graeme Miller (NZl) New Zealand National Team 11 Dae-Hong Chun (Kor) Korean National Team 12 Kyoshi Miura (Jpn) Kinan Maruishi 13 Takashi Miyazawa (Jpn) RT Nippon Hodo 14 Martin Laciak (Cze) Wüstenrot-ZVVZ 15 Tae Chan Chang (Kor) Korean National Team 16 Pietro Zucconi (Ita) Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola 17 Chris Matthys (Bel) Flanders-Prefetex 18 Makoto Iijima (Jpn) Sumita Ravanello Pearlizumi 19 Scott Davis (Aus) Australian National Team 20 Shinri Suzuki (Jpn) Shimano Racing Team 21 Ken Hashikawa (Jpn) Team Bridgestone Anchor 22 Dariusz Skoczylas (Pol) Mroz-Supradyn Witaminy 23 Marco Gili (Ita) Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola 24 Masamichi Yamamoto (Jpn) Shimano Racing Team 25 Yasutaka Tashiro (Jpn) Team Bridgestone Anchor 26 Shinichi Fukushima (Jpn) Team Bridgestone Anchor 27 Mitsuteru Tanaka (Jpn) Asian Ind.
