By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Coach

The Gran Premio "Industrie dell Marmo" was held at and around Carrara. The last time we did this race was in 1999 when Tom Leaper won it so we had hopes to repeat the performance. The course includes a fairly tough climb up through the marble mine that the area is famous for and through a 500 meter long narrow tunnel. The Australian / NZ team consisted of Jeremy Yates, Graeme Brown, Scott and Allan Davis, Gene Bates and Daniel Mackey.

The race came to life at around the halfway mark with the group continually splitting and reforming, each time with less riders. The final front group that fought out the win was 19 riders and included Allan Davis, who has had consistent good form recently. After non stop attacking over the final kilometers Nicola Pavone from Italfine got clear and held on well on the drag up to the finish. The bunch sprinted behind him with Allan taking 5th place to add to his growing list of top 10 places this year.
