Breakaways take the tour

By Mark Carter*
The final, decisive 148km 'Queen Stage' of the 2001 Canberra Tour was raced today, in glorious sunshine of 18-20 degrees. The first break of the day went after the first King of the Mountains prime, which had six riders, including Klayten Smith, Denis Mungoven, Jono McCormack and Ben Godbridge.

The group swapped off over the hilly terrain, establishing a lead of over five minutes as its maximum advantage. The group stayed away over Fitz's hill, around the turn at 74km covered and then back over Fitz's hill. The leaders were eventually caught at the Corin Dam Road at 118km covered. Catalyst rider Michael Tolhurst counter attacked and quickly went away to a one minute advantage. Klayten Smith, Denis Mungoven, Kristin Lewis and Glenn Stojanow went in pursuit of Tolhurst. Mungoven was quickly unloaded and Smith and Lewis bridged across to Tolhurst with 10km to go and went straight past.

The main field caught Tolhurst halfway up the final climb out of the Cotter, but Tolhurst went straight through and out the back. In the final two up sprint Kristin Lewis was too strong for Klayten Smith, putting four to five bike lengths into him in the final metres, but this was more than enough for Smith who picked up the 10 seconds bonus for the second place and then had to agonise over the wait to see whether the bunch would make it home in time.

The first yellow jersey of the tour, Kristjan Snorrason led the bunch home, ahead of Paul Rowney, the yellow jersey holder after stage one, with Nathan Russell in third. Overnight leader David Pell of Bendigo also finished in this group of 13, however relinquished the overall General Classification to Klayten Smith and finished second.

Women A grade: Stage 3 - May 13 - Duffy to Honeysuckle Creek and Return

Gollan pips Williams in close finish

By Mark Carter
The women's A Grade race was not an overly aggressive race for the final stage, given that only six seconds separated overnight leader Naomi Williams from Olivia Gollan. On the first climb of the day up to Pierces Creek at 13km covered, the bunch was strung out. Julie Hooper took the QOM points from Gollan, which moved Gollan two seconds closer to Williams.

The bunch came back together after the climb and remained that way for the most. The 'City Cycles' girls had a few attacks, but nothing came to fruition and they were out of contention after yesterday anyway. On the final climb from the Cotter at 10km to go the bunch was still one unit, before Helen Kelly attacked and commenced proceedings, but was reeled back in.

Williams attacked close to the top of the climb with less than 4km remaining and Gollan bridged, leaving the top two on GC together at the Stomlo turn with 2km to go, which meant the race woiuld come down to a sprint, as the stage win would earn the 20 second bonus.

The pair played cat and mouse and as they rounded the final corner and with 800m to go the bunch was right on their heels. A nasty crash marred the finale, bringing down three riders from this bunch with 2km to go, two had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. Gollan led into the final straight and Williams kicked a long way out with more than 350m remaining on the gradual uphill sprint. Gollan grabbed her wheel and managed to overtake with 50m to go to win with Natalie Bates in third. The 20 second time bonus to Gollan and 10 seconds to Williams, with the two second differential from the first climb, gave Gollan the win by six seconds over Williams, with initial race leader Bates in third.

Tour comes together after car rally crashes original start

By Mark Carter
The 19th Canberra Tour came to a close today, after an incredible amount of work from race director MaryAnn Simpson, who had to change the date of the race with one month's notice due to the clash with the Rally of Canberra.

An imeasurable amount of thanks must go to MaryAnn after re-arranging 400 riders, and up to 100 volunteer staff, Police and Urban Services as well as airlines to arrive in Canberra one week later for the Tour. The mobile espresso van of 'Rudy's' was a tremendous success and riders and supporters basked in glorious sunshine for the entire duration of the weekend.

Thank you to our sponsors Power Bar, the official race food for the Tour, as well as Hammer 'n' Cycle bike shop for their tremendous support. Thanks must also go to Stephen Hodge for assisting the orchestration of the weekend, as well as Bern and Colleen Meadley who organised the catering. Also all of our volunteer road marshals, support vehicles, commissaires, mechanics, judges, time keepers, chute staff, medical staff, baristas, photographer Marcus Hayman, official results staff Les Landau and Penny Haman and the Police for the massive amount of unseen work which is undertaken under the immense stress of organising seven grades, consisting of 400 riders in one of the single biggest bike racing events in the country.
