Saturn dominate first day of US Nats

In what can only be described as a day of perfection for the Saturn cycling team, Trent Klasna and Kimberly Bruckner won their respective races today to become the new 2001 National Time Trial Champions. Both Klasna and Bruckner overcame the oppressive heat in Redding, CA win by a convincing margins on the 34 kilometer rolling out and back course.

Klasna bested second placed Adham Sbeih (Navigator's) by nearly a minute, riding 42.10 for the 34 km. Sbeih finished with a time of 43.18 and third place went to Doug Ziewacz (7-UP) in 43.57.

Klasna was delighted with his win, as his last National Championship was in 1994. Today was another sign his tremendous focus, determination and form this season. "When you are on a roll, you are on a roll," he commented.

Similar to her teammate's upset, Bruckner won by nearly 40 seconds over 2000 World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist, Mari Holden (Alfa Lum). Bruckner’s winning time of 47.33 amazed even her.

"I can't believe I beat Mari," she said. "What an honor to win such a prestigious title." Holden was second in today's race with a time of 48:13 while Autotrader.com’s Pam Schuster rounded out the top three with a time of 49:39. For the women, today's race was one of the qualifiers for the 2001 World Championships in Portugal in October, giving Bruckner the chance to represent the US at Worlds.

Day 2 - May 26: Road Races, Redding, 180 km/112 km (M/W)

Bruckner takes women's race solo

Saturn's Kimberley Bruckner has become a dual national champion after winning today's hilly 112 kilometre circuit race in Redding, CA. She finished alone, ahead of Amber Neben (Harbor Lights) who she had dropped on the final climb, and Saturn teammate Suzanne Sonye, who won the bunch sprint for third.

The four lap circuit (with 10 kilometres riding each way to get to it) was similar to the one on which Bruckner won her 1999 title. The Saturn team only had two riders in the race, and weren't expected to dominate in their usual fashion. However, Bruckner's climbing ability is perhaps only bettered by Genevieve Jeanson in domestic races, and she made the most of the fact that Jeanson wasn't competing (being Canadian).

Bruckner attacked hard on the first lap to try and dislodge the pack, but it failed to have the desired immediate effect. Not disheartened, she tried again on the second lap, and this time it worked as she rode away with Amber Neben on her wheel. The two stayed together for the third lap, before Bruckner powered away to take the race on the fourth climb. Neben hung on for second, while Sonye won the bunch sprint for the bronze medal.

"I still can't believe that I am National Champion, again," said an ecstatic Bruckner at the finish. I was a little concerned the first time up the climb, but Suzanne really helped me stay strong."

Sonye added "We're pretty happy."
