It's not quite Millar time yet for the Cofidis time trial specialist,
after he was beaten into second place by his Belgian teammate Nico Mattan
in the opening 6.2 kilometre prologue of Paris-Nice. Mattan clocked
7'48 for his ride at an average speed of 47.692 km/h) to bump Millar
into second, while Festina's Florent Brard took third place.
Mattan relished the wet conditions in Nevers, and said that he "had
good legs and I told my teammates this was going to be my day."
He accurately predicted a Cofidis 1-2 finish, and the team also finished
with Phillippe Gaumont in fourth, marginally slower than Brard.
Of the other favourites, Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour) managed
6th place, 12 seconds behind Mattan. He said that he "struggled to find
a good rhythm, but finished strongly." The Jean Delatour team also placed
two more riders in the top 15, much to the satisfaction of director
Michel Gros.
Telekom leader, Alexandre Vinokourov lost 23 seconds in the bad conditions,
finishing in almost the same time as his out of form teammate, Andreas
Klöden (27th). Alex Zülle (Coast) had a poor ride, finishing 55th, while
Bobby Julich (Credit Agricole) was unlucky to puncture shortly after
the start, and finished 135th at 51 seconds. However, Credit Agricole
managed to place Frédéric Finot, Stuart O'Grady, and Thor Hushovd in
8th, 9th and 10th positions.
Mercury-Viatel had a good start, with KBK winner Peter Van Petegem
finishing 5th at 11 seconds, and Floyd Landis 11th at 16 seconds.
Tomorrow's first stage will be held between Saint-Amand-Montrond (Cher)
and Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme) over a 189.2 kilometre flat course.
