Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom) came within five metres of recording a stage win in Paris-Nice, until he was caught on the line by a certain Peter Van Petegem (Mercury-Viatel). Van Petegem led home a small group of riders, who had successfully chased Vinokourov down after an epic breakaway. The 195.4 kilometre stage from Clermont-Ferrand to Saint-Etienne was reasonably hilly, with the longest climb being the Pradeaux Pass (15.1 km at 4.5%). The challenging terrain and the poor weather saw several more good riders withdraw, including Andreas Klöden, Patrick Jonker, Jaan Kirsipuu and Robbie McEwen. And when the final split came on a small climb just before the finish, all but 15 riders lost valuable time, including Laurent Brochard, Patrice Halgand, Nico Mattan, David Millar, David Etxebarria and Bobby Julich. Vinokourov had made his move in the early part of the stage, along with 20 other riders including Agnolutto (Ag2r), Landis (Mercury), Laurent Dufaux (Saeco), Jose Azevedo (ONCE), Tobias Steinhauser (Gerolsteiner), David Moncoutié (Cofidis), and Rolf Huser (Coast). The group had nearly 5 minutes with 90 kilometres to go and were well represented, with 18 teams having riders up the front.
A subsequent attack from Vinokourov, Dufaux, Azevedo, Steinhauser, Moncoutié, and Huser looked to have the race sewn up with 30 kilometres to go, but their 2 minute lead vanished over the next 20 kilometres. Vinokourov went solo on the St Héand climb with 10 km left, and led a fast charging group by 10 seconds with 1 kilometre to go. This wasn't enough for the Khazakh however, and Van Petegem came from nowhere to outsprint him, with Dario Frigo and Michele Bartoli taking third and fourth respectively. "Two hundred metres from the finishing line my legs felt like lead," said Vinokourov. "But I wanted to believe I could win. Today's effort was all for nothing, but the race isn't over yet." It was Van Petegem's second major win of the season so far, after Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne last weekend, indicating the Belgian is very much the man to watch in these early races.
Tomorrow's third stage is 217.9 kilometres between Saint-Etienne and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, and should suit the sprinters.
