Another Dam Race (NE)

Parker, AZ, March 24-25, 2001

Stage 1 - March 24: Road Race, 143 km

By Jason Waddell

The town of Parker puts this race on with the majority of the sponsorship money coming from the town's Casino, The Blue Water Resort and Casino. Parker is located approx. 170 miles west of Phoenix and lies right on the Colorado River. The weather this time of year is usually not this hot, proclaimed one local townie. At 8:30am the temperature was already 71 deg F and the Pro/cat 1 race was not due to start till 1:30pm. The temp at start time was hot as hell (OK it was around 90 deg F). That was enough for the officials to ask the racers if we wanted to shorten the race from 99 miles, and of course we "wanted" to do the 99 miles but during our race the officials shortened the race to 89 miles anyway.

The course was an 11 mile loop that had two 180 deg turns at each end. The organisers thought that it would be a good idea to put the turns at the bottom of two hills, yes it hurt but it did weaken some riders and approx. only 25-35 of the 73 riders that started finished in the main pack. There were four climbs per 11 mile loop.

The Mercury team sent a group of riders to the race that included Marty Nothstein (Olympic Gold Medalist) and the NetZero.net team also fielded a group of around 10 riders.

The racers were called to the line for race instructions and after that the officials called four riders from the Mercury team to the front. The official then announced that three riders from the Mercury team, Nothstein, Chris Pic, Nathan Treato, would be disqualified from the race and that a request for a 15 day suspension would be sent to USA cycling headquarters! It was reported that the three riders in question disobeyed traffic laws and then proceeded to make rude and slanderous comments to Law Enforcement officers that were doing traffic control. The race officials said that they would not allow riders or anyone to act in such manner and asked the three riders to please leave.

The Mercury riders as well as the rest of the 200+ riders from other categories and the field were stunned! John Peters from the Mercury team then rode off the course and was also DQ'ed. Very interesting way to start a race...

The race itself was animated primarily by the NetZero team who had more than enough riders to keep attacking. After many groups of breakaways and many chases the race was looking like a field sprint. This was not to be as riders continued to attack.

With 22 miles to go a break went in pursuit of Graeme Miller (netzero) who was dangling off the front of the field at 30 seconds. Shawn McCormack (Saturn devolpment squad), Tim Johnson (Saturn), Phil Zajieck (Mercury), Jason Waddell (Mathis Brothers.com), Will Black (Hybrid), and a Netzero and a Landis cyclery rider were the riders.

With one lap to go, the field was barrelling down on the breakaway which was now down to 5 riders. With Johnson and Zajicek taking turns attacking on the hill, McCormack then Waddell were dropped and Miller, Johnson, Zajicek set off on their own. With the field no more than 20 seconds behind the three riders it was thought that they would be caught. It was not to be as the three held off the hard charging field with Miller taking the sprint from Zajicek and Johnson, with Waddell taking the field sprint.

In the women's race, Redlands Classic winner, Genevieve Jeanson, showed her excellent form by winning the road race by a massive 8 minutes from New Zealander, Joanne Kiesanowski.

The second stage was a 1 hour criterium held on a 1.4 mile circuit that featured 7 turns. The tempature was 90 deg F at the 3:30 start time.

With Netzero leading the GC and fielding at least 10 riders it was assumed that the inevitable field sprint would round out the weekend's festivities. This was not to be as NetZero went to the front right from the gun and sent off Jamie Paolinetti and Graeme Miller off the front of the field, never to be brought back. Tim Johnson (Saturn) and Phil Zajicek (Mercury) did their best to bring back the two escapees with some admirable help from Ben Sharpe (GoMart).

The two Netzero riders never gained more than 30 sec on the field, but with no organized teams to help chase and with Netzero riders blocking and riding at the front the break dangled off the front.

The last lap was all but a promenade for the remaining riders that were vying for the remaining GC spots. The remaining NetZero riders took charge of the field on the last lap only to be thwarted by Jonas Carney (Prime Alliance) who took the field sprint by a wheel over Jason Waddell (MathisBrothers.com).

The final GC shuffled very little with Paolinetti and Carney moving forward thanks to their time bonuses. Graeme Miller and the NetZero.net team rode a great race and the weekend was a great success for the racers and the promoters.

Next stop is the Lance Armstrong BMC criterium in Austin, TX on April 7. See you there...

Spring Series Race #4

The final race in the SpringSeries took place on Saturday, March 24. Once again due to road conditions the race was held on a shorter flatter circuit than normal. Ultimately it would be the wind and not the circuit that played a major role in the outcome of both races. For the final race in the series, the distances were upped from the previous week, with the A race doing 62 miles, and the B race doing 50 miles.

For the second week in a row the racing in the A field started soon after the neutral roll out ended. With major cross winds blowing, no one expected an early break to stick. But Mapei's Sean Nealy had other plans, and took off on his own shortly after the end of the first lap. While content to sit in and train last week, this week Sean was racing. It didn't take more than a couple of laps for the strong teams to realize that this was the move, and only GS Mengoni and Wheelworks-Cannondale could respond. Each team sent their strongest rider up the road, Charlie Issendorf for Mengoni, and Curt Davis for Wheelworks-Cannondale.

For the second week in a row, once the leaders were established, they simply rode away from the field. But this week saw gusting winds that were shattering the chasing field, causing many riders to abandon. With three laps remaining in the race a chase organized by the UB Saeco team from Canada managed to pull a group of three off the front of the field. But joining Saeco's Carl Desserault were last week's winner Chris Peck (Wheelworks-Cannondale) and first year senior Matt Wilson (GS Mengoni). With Peck and Wilson unwilling to chase down their teammates, the chase group resigned themselves to sprinting for fourth place.

At the finish Mapei's Nealy easily took the win ahead of Davis and Issendorf. The gap back to the field was so big, the three leaders were already giving post race interviews before the chase group even came into sight. And when the chase group did come into sight, they inexplicably crossed the center line, leaving the officials little choice to disqualify the trio. Thirty seconds later Laurel Bicycle Club's Joe Regan came across the line happy to hold off a charging field, and happy to find his seventh place had turned into fourth. Behind Regan, the field swarmed over the center line, and were disqualified en masse.

If last week's B race was less than agressive, then this week's race more than made up for it. After a fairly uneventful first half, the race saw a series of attacks at the midway point that nearly halved the size of the group. With four laps to go Jeff Fisher of the Maine CC opened up a forty-second gap on the field. One lap later Team Psycho Triathlete's Dan Davenport and Devo junior Jeremy Powers put in a strong attack into the headwind stretch to try and bridge across. The two worked well together, but Fisher was too strong, and managed to stay away to the line. Powers took second place, with Davenport in third. Behind the field was reduced to just twelve riders, shattering on the last lap. NCC-BikeReg.com's Karen Walkerman was the top women finisher in the B race.

Full race results and times can be found on-line at www.BikeReg.com, the official race registration service of the SpringSeries. Held in Gill, Massachusetts the SpringSeries is promoted by Pioneer Event Productions, and benefits the Gill Volunteer Fire Department and the Pioneer Valley Velodrome Fund. The race is sponsored in part by Bicycle World of Greenfield, Massachusetts.
