Business as usual for Lovatt

Mark Lovatt (ProVision/Ribble Cycles) continued where he left off at the end of his successful 2000 season with victory in the first round of the 2001 Premier Calendar, Romford-Harlow. Julian Winn was first over the line, but was relegated to second place following a protest about his sprinting tactics. Commissaires ruled that Winn had illegally changed his line during the sprint, impeding Lovatt in the process. In third place, at the head of a small bunch, was Anthony Malarczyk (Atom Elite RT), just ahead of Kevin Dawson (Peter Read Racing), with Matt Bottril fifth.

The fact that the race went ahead at all was testament to the hard work and determination of the race organisers who had to re-route the race after foot and mouth restrictions came into play on their original course. Flooding last week added to their difficulties, but they still delivered a safe even without police assistance. The field responded by entertained a good crowd with an exciting race which will hopefully send a positive message to other race organisers round the country in these difficult times.
