The Auckland Interclub Championship is conducted over 4 races during the next 8 weeks with each round being conducted by a different Club in the Auckland region with racing for all categories from Junior 15 to Masters. This morning's first round was held in beautiful late summer sunshine on a 9km fast and undulating circuit at Kumeu in the heart of Auckland's picturesque winegrowing and orchard district. A quick stop at Blosssom's Café (with 3 s's) situated next to Boric's Orchard for the pre-race coffee and muffin, impressively served by my nephew and budding waiter, Franco Boric ensured we arrived for the race well prepared. The morning's race programme started with Junior under 15 (18km) and Junior under 17 (27km) races which were won respectively by Andrew Robertson (Akarana) and Ross Fone (Counties Manakau). The 6 lap (55km) Senior men's race boasted former NZ road representatives Karl Murray, Darien Rush and 2001 Tour of Wellington Sprint Ace, Gordon Bearman who were using the Interclub series as preparation for their coming seasons locally and overseas. Despite the relatively small field, Darien Rush (Waitakere/Pt Chev) and David Ray (Counties Manakau) kept the pressure on in the early laps, which resulted in the field being reduced to 6 riders for the final lap. On the 2nd to last undulating climb, Karl Murray (Akarana) used his lean 'climbing' physique to jump away from the field and solo the fast 5km downhill run to the finish for an impressive win. Darien Rush showed a fine return to racing by leading out the sprint before being caught on the line from a fast finishing Gordon Bearman (North Harbour). The 4 lap(36km) Masters race had the largest field of the day and also included Melissa Holt, 13th and 3rd placed New Zealander in last weeks round of the Womens World Cup race in Hamilton. The race turned into somewhat of a procession when Rodney Grant (Counties Manakau) and Tod Penberthy (North Harbour) jumped away on the 1st lap and established a solid 1'30" break which was to last the entire race. With only a handful of riders working, but never at a pace that was likely to threaten the 2 man breakaway, Counties Manakau rider, Rodney Grant was able to win first points of the round.
