The traditional loop had taken a beating with all of the weather, and as a result the riders faced a redesigned 4 mile loop that was a bit flatter but no less difficult. Due to the smaller course and concerns with the fields overlapping the 3 races on offer were consolidated into 2 groups. The A race started with a short neutral roll out to the course, but as soon as the riders hit kilometer zero racing began in earnest. Despite the smaller field there was plenty of talent in attendance. Local teams NCC-BikeReg.com, CVC-Pig Iron, Wheelworks-Cannondale, and GS Mengoni all had several riders in the group. The UB Saeco team from Canada added some international flair to the race along with Mapei amateur Sean Nealey. The Trek women's team was well represented with Katrina Davis and Laura Shuford. At the end of the second lap a group of five riders escaped the field. With teammates back in the field, plus the prospect of eleven more windy laps, the gap quickly widened. The five quickly got down to business, hammering out a three-minute lead over the next couple of laps. But on lap five of thirteen the leading group split, with Wheelworks-Cannondale's Chris Peck and UB Saeco's Carl Desserault going up the road, while the remaining three started to fade back to the now chasing pack. NCC-BikeReg.com'sSteve Roszko attempted to bridge to the remnants of the break, but found it tough going in the constant wind. Up front, the two leaders were working together and building up a four-minute advantage, almost catching the B pack in the process. With two laps to go the pack could sense that the last 3 paying spots were within reach. When New York City time trial ace Charlie Issendorf (GS Mengoni) hit the front, it only took him a lap to pull back the chasers and the remainder of the break. The finish came down to a drag race between Peck and Desserault, with Cannondale's head road bike designer Peck holding on for the win. Four minutes later the pack roared into the finish with Keith Berger (CVC-Pig Iron) powering by Adam Hodges Myerson (GS Mengoni) for third. Seventeen-year-old Junior JoshGerwitz filled out the placings with a fine fifth place. Trek's Laura Shuford was the top women finisher, with teammate Katrina Davis in second. The B race was run over 10 laps of the same circuit. Despite several attempts to form breaks, the group came down to the final lap pretty much intact. In the final kilometer two riders were able to slip clear of the group, with Brian Clark of the Expo Wheelmen getting the win over Breeze Keller, another seventeen-year-old Junior. Twelve seconds later the pack was led in by NCC-BikeReg.com's Peter Martel, with David Katz (BRC) and John Fitzpatrick (NCC-BikeReg.com) rounding out the top five. Kathryn Kothe of the NCC-BikeReg.com team was the top women finisher in the B race. Full race results and times can be found on-line at http://www.bikereg.com/,the official race registration service of the SpringSeries. The final race of the SpringSeries will be held on Saturday, March 24th. The races will be held on the revised course, but the distances will increase slightly. Held in Gill, Massachusetts the SpringSeries is promoted by Pioneer Event Productions, and benefits the Gill Volunteer Fire Department and the Pioneer Valley Velodrome Fund. The race is sponsored in part by Bicycle World of Greenfield, Massachusetts. A fundraiser for New Mexico's velodrome project, the fields were flush with competition and anticipation. The course is challenging. It is a 3.2-mile circuit with about 200 feet of climbing per lap, all spread across the north side of the route in a long, dragged out fashion. Once over the top of the climb, you descend downward at speeds nearing 50mph to a hard right turn, a slight rise and then a screamer to the finish a mile away. The attacks are frequent and there are plenty of opportunities to get away. The wind plays a particular havoc on this course, as well. A crosswind on the climb can shatter the field. On this St. Patrick's Day, the weather was uncooperative. Early racers arrived to the sight of snow on the ground. While the fluffy white precip quickly melted, the roads were left wet and the sky cloudy. Throughout the day, the sky crumbled into your choice of rain, snow or hail. Altogether an ugly, ugly day. The A-race was a hard fought battle. From the gun it was aggressive. On lap two, Ryan Blickem, Realitybikes.com neo pro, took off. Early on, no one took chase, preferring to see Blickem wither on his own off the front. His lead, however, continued to grow and patience dwindled. On the next journey up the climb, the patience ended, and Dan Doornbos (Zia Velo) jumped. On his wheel were Tim Erwin (dLowracing.org), Ken Zimmerman (KHSnm.com), Derek Moffet (NMVS) and Alex Andel (KHSnm.com). Gareth Jones (Ochsner) bridged up almost immediately, making a Blickem chase group of six. Oddly, Blickem, who must have seen the group moving across his gap, continued to put the pressure on. He dragged out his capture for more than a lap. Once caught, though, he joined in the machinery that was the break. The compact group was a decent representation of the field, and as such, if they cooperated, they would likely be able to stay away for the duration. Now five or so laps into a 15 lap event, the break went to work. The workhorses were Doornbos, Jones, Blickem, Andel and Erwin. Zimmerman was playing coy in the break and Moffet was sitting on for unknown reasons. Erwin was particularly frustrated with Zimmerman's behavior, and made it known verbally. Ken remained stoic and conserved his energy for the drama to come. The break rode a steady tempo for the next hour, with the gap holding at over 2 minutes. With 3 laps to go, a group of 5 riders had moved clear of the field and had closed down the gap to 25 seconds. There were several very strong riders in the race behind the break, and when the support vehicle was asked who was in the chase group, the response was short: "KHS". Knowing this, the break picked up the pace. With Clay Moseley, Todd Bauer and Doug Campbell coming across, the small group's dynamic was going to change. Along with the group were a strong Scott Romero (Team El Paso) and Bart Bowen, in his first race of the year. Andel sat on the break and waited for his teammates to come across. Zimmerman, meanwhile, had attacked on the climb and built up a nice gap. Doornbos suggested that he should be left out front for a while to wear himself down as the end drew close. As soon as Moseley gained the break, he set forth in pursuit of his new teammate, and soon caught him. Scott Romero, too, decided to chase away. These moves shattered the formerly compact break and it crumbled to many pieces. Several aggressive efforts by Doornbos and Blickem were fruitless in capturing the three new leaders, as they extended their lead. With one lap to go, there were three out front and a loose group of 8 riders behind. Up the final climb, the race split up again, and, just as before, it came back together with gritted teeth and cramping muscles. The three leaders were, by now, assured the top three places on the podium, and the small group that was now seven would challenge for 4th. As the leaders came through the final 100meters, the race was tight. Moseley later reported that he was cramping, but they stayed neck and neck. Across the line and it was tight. Ken Zimmerman managed that extra umph to inch his wheel just before Romero. Moseley was third. Behind, the cat and mouse games started with Doornbos throwing the field behind a few curve balls. Andel then took off a' la Tchmil, a suicide move with 750 m to go. Tim Erwin got on his wheel and wouldn't let go. With 100m, Andel pulled off and the jostling began. Todd Bauer started his sprint from 5 spots back, and despite a great leadout by teammate Campbell, didn't have quite enough to overtake Erwin for 4th at the line. The field trickled in over the next several minutes, with many dropouts due to the nasty weather and tough racing. KHSnm.com came together in this early race and discovered that they will be able to work together. With the win and 5 of its 6 riders in the top 10, the results spoke for themselves. Next week, in two races promoted by the team, they'll try to gel even further. No doubt the other teams will have something to say about that.
