London Fire Brigade CC RR - 90km

Crowhurst, March 17, 2001

The first Surrey League road race of the 2001 season was excellently promoted as usual by the London Fire Brigade CC on the Crowhurst Circuit. As one of the few remaining road races on the calendar it attracted a large number of riders. 35 of the 76 starters entered "on-the-line".

The course of nine laps of this deceptively hard but fast circuit was covered in just 2:19:00 for the 90 kms. The pace was extremely fast. The first lap was covered in just over 14 minutes and saw many riders in trouble with legs and lungs not ready to appreciate riding at nearly 30mph in March.

Even so, four riders managed to get clear of the bunch on this first lap: Richard Prebble, Team Clean; Bill Butterworth, Twickenham; Sam Ward, Knaresborough RT; and Rob Adams, Bristol South. This quartet gradually drew away until they had a gap of just over a minute. Then after four laps Adams had the misfortune to puncture and was forced to retire. The remaining three continued their fast pace holding their lead. On the fifth lap a counter attack was launched by Robin Jackson, Hounslow; Rob Enslin, Twickenham; and Paul Allen, Pearson Cycles. While this trio gradually gained on the leaders their lead on the still pursuing bunch remained at a handful of seconds. Tomas Thorndycraft of the San Fairy Ann managed to join the chasers with three laps to go and at the same time an attack by Prebble managed to dislodge Butterworth from the leading group. With a lap to go Prebble and Ward had distanced Butterworth but he in turn was still clear of the chasers until halfway round the last lap.

Came the sprint and it looked like being a close run thing when Ward pulled his foot out and just missed a trip along the grass verge leaving Prebble a clear winner. His year away from road racing has meant a drop to second category for Richard but I don't think he will be there very long on this form.

The chasing group put in a spirited finish and to everyone's surprise it was Bill Butterworth who took third spot even after his race-long break beating his team mate Rob Enslin by a length. Paul Allen, Pearson Cycles, was close up in fifth spot. Robin Jackson sixth and Tomas Thorndycraft seventh.

A closely packed bunch of 35 riders for the sprint saw Mark Scoular, Liphook Cycles, lead in Phil Rayner, Brixton Cycles; Richard Powell, Team Quest; Marcus Brueton, Norwood Paragon; and Keith Knight, Addiscombe CC.

Women's Handicap Event

Braving the elements 22 women lined up in the icy wind and fought out an excellent handicap event. Split into three groups the front group rode strongly despite some determined chasing. Making the most of the handicap fourth cat. Maggie Hall held on for a fine win ahead of a determined chase from Sharon Padley and 13 year old Kimberley Blythe.

2/3/4/J Event

Despite the atrocious conditions nearly 60 riders started this event. Straight from the start there was a constant stream of attacks but a vigilant bunch refused to let any group gain a significant lead in the early stages. After Simon Moss had won his second prime, experienced Pete Bonfield along with Mark Booth, immediately launched a classic attack with 10 miles remaining. Quickly opening up a gap of 15 seconds the powerful Booth and speedy Bonfield were never seen again, despite a gallant solo chase by Moss. At the finish Bonfield had too much speed and experience for the valiant Booth, with Moss salvaging third and junior James Cartwright easily winning the bunch sprint for fourth.

Afterwards Bonfield was full of praise for his breakaway partner, but was determined that the win was to be his after last weeks near miss at Hillingdon. Now a family man of 37 Bonfield has returned to racing after a 4 year lay off. Training since Christmas, around his new job as director of timber centre for Building Research Establishment, Bonfield has a burning desire to win and be involved in positive racing. He has returned to his roots by rejoining the Welwyn Wheelers, who he first rode for when he was 11 years old, in between winning the National Schoolboy title in '79, finishing 12th in the Junior World's Road Race and many Great Britain international performances.
