Series - Round 20 (final) Canberra Cycling Club Summer Criterium Series - Round 20 (final)The Causeway - Kingston, March 14, 2001 ReportBy Mark Carter A coolish, breezy Autumn night greeted riders for the final round of the CCC 2000/01 Criterium Series, on what would be the night of nights, as the top two teams clashed, commencing the night only one point apart. The scene was set early after the lone representatives from the Lonsdale and Rideshop teams (Dau & Carter) in B grade staged a great duel in an effort to score maximum points before the A grade race. The B grade race remained intact for the most and while most eyes centred on Dau and Carter who'd shadowed each other through the whole race, the Festina II team had plans of their own, hoping to stage a one, two, three (24 points), which may well have snared them the teams title. Paul Scherl and Luke Grattan attacked up the inside (from the back) with one and a half laps to go, and took team mate Claringbold with them (from midfield). The move looked good, as Paxus frantically chased the 25m hole. The Paxus and Festina riders who held the front few spots weren't making inroads fast enough and Jeff Dau stepped across the gap, with Carter in tow. Up the back straight with half a lap to go and Hennessy was calling from the sidelines for Dau to move from fourth to first, which Dau did, with Carter slotting in, in second wheel for the final two corners. Out of the final corner Dau stepped on the gas and Carter was unable to come round. Dau running out the winner by a length over Carter with John Thorn in third. The win for Lonsdale and the second for Rideshop now left the deficit at three points, which Lonsdale held over Rideshop. In the A grade the race was abuzz with energy, in anticipation of an epic clash. Spectators were not let down, on what was one of the most exciting tactical races of the year. In the first 10 minutes there were many breaks, none of them ever commanding more than a three second lead. After 12 minutes covered in the 20 minute plus three lap race, four riders (Savage, Bardsley, Sieper and Lindsay Burke) jumped clear. Two laps later brother Baden Burke joined the quartet, which sent the Lonsdale squadra to the fore in pursuit. Danny Hennessy and Trevor Rix absolutely buried themselves for Mungoven and had managed to neutralise the break by 16 minutes. The sheer speed of the race was taking its toll as a third of the field went out the back. Meanwhile the race was fragmenting again at the front, just as the Lonsdale boys caught the break. At 17.5 minutes Mungoven, Rogers, Sutherland, Sieper and Bardsley were just clear of the field, but doing little more than forcing more riders out the back. At three laps to go Stve Blackburn cleared away to a break of three seconds, but this was short lived, as the entire bunch came round together to receive the two laps to go. On the final lap it was a wall of yellow Lonsdale jerseys and blue Rideshop jerseys as the sprinters lined up for one final time in the most decisive lap of the season. Baden Burke led the charge out of the final corner with Mungoven in second wheel. Mungoven was fading and Pete Rogers moved to the left side of the road in search of the second place, as Burke was already coasting, arms held high. Rogers just snuck in for second to complete the quinella with Rob McLachlan coming home third. The lonsdale boys took fourth, fifth and sixth via Hennessy, Mungoven and Rix. The final wash up was that Rideshop had erased the three point deficit to win the series by eight points in an epic evening of racing. With more comfortable, cooler weather rider numbers were up for Round 11 of the Summer Criterium Series. B Grade who have tended to struggle in recent weeks got off to a strong start and settled into a good tempo which forced the chasing A Grade bunch to work extra hard just to make an impression on closing the 1' 30" time gap. B Grade easily collected the sprint points in the 7, 5 and 3 to go sprint primes before picking up a big C Grade bunch on the second last lap. With A grade still nowhere in sight, it was left to B and C grade to battle out for overall honours and in a 20 up sprint, Scott Nolan again showed off his fine sprinting form to take a good win, while some 10sec behind Stuart Dangerfield and Sung Cho-Ho had ridden away from the A grade bunch with the Korean rider winning the 2 up sprint for A grade honours to take his 3rd A grade win in 4 weeks. The points series is ten races held during the year through country Victoria. Riders gain points for finishing in the top five (7, 5, 3, 2, 1) and prize money is generally paid down to tenth. The fastest time rider also gains 3 points and a new innovation this year is each rider that enters also gets one point which could prove handy towards the top three pointscorers. The overall winner, along with second and third secure for themselves $700, $200, $100 and trophies for their efforts. Race 1 'The Long Road' 89 riders fronted at Woodstock, near Bendigo, where the Central Victorian Veterans CC hosted the first race. The name 'Long' is synonymous with bike racing and today would prove no different, more on that later. 56 kms faced the 89 starters and the weather was warm with a slight breeze. I heard a few riders debating about taking one or two bidons, I found one 750 mL bidon enough, because I was hoping the beer would be cold at the finish and I wasn't let down. 28 minutes separated scratch from the limit markers, the first capture of the bunches, that I saw, occurred at the 30 km mark where firstly the 8 minute bunch caught the 10 minute bunch and shortly after the 12 minute boys and girls were reeled in. I believe some of the front groups were already together with exception to the 22 and 28 minutes groups. Average speeds at this stage were around the 37-39 kph mark. A bit of surging and long turns whittled down the bunch to approximately 20 riders. The right hand turn into the Woodstock road, 14 kms from the finish, also caused a bit of concern/selection if you weren't up the front, as riders were looking for the elusive 22 and 28 minutes bunches. The riders turned into a cross headwind coming from their right front. The remaining riders were pulled into the main field with about 10kms to go and now the race was on. Riders were spread out over the narrow road in an echelon, which saw a number of riders quickly spat out the back with nowhere to hide from the wind. About 10 to 12 riders had gone clear and were working hard, but the 6 minutes bunch weren't out of it yet. The 6 minutes boys wound in the leading group with a couple of k's to go. A big bunch of about 15-20 were now ready to fight out the finish and this is where the name Long comes in. The sprint started with the officials allowing the riders to use all the road, as traffic was next to nil. John Long, (Northern Vets-12 mins), son of Bill Long kicked from the bunch to take out the first race, the points and money on offer for the day. 2nd across the line was Trevor Redman (Northern Vets-6 mins) with 3rd Mark Rye (Central Vets-6 mins). The Eastern Vets club was represented by Mario Cordedda (4 mins), Michael Tilley (8 mins), Steven Di-Tullio (12 mins), John Wilson (10 mins), and Jacqui Kennedy (22 mins) unfortunately none featured in the placing, but did successfully complete the race. Thanks to the officials, the support vehicle drivers and their personal cars, the ladies who provided a great spread for afternoon tea, the Central Goldfields first aid personnel and the barman for the nice cold beer after the race. It takes more than a flash flood and 30 cm of water surging through the clubrooms to cancel our Sunday morning crit. Because of the smaller numbers A and B Grade rode a 60 minute handicap, while C and D Grades followed their usual format. A grade was chasing one and a half minutes, and at the 10 minute mark Jon Cantwell decided that the pace needed lifting, so he launched an attack which put paid to the chances of the whole A Grade field, with the exception of John Kane. These two worked steadily together, but at the half way mark they were still 40 seconds in arrears. B Grade had also split, and only masters Paul Wild, Paul Howard and Dave Williams, plus 15 year old Ben Mockridge were left at the front. Gradually the pace began to tell on this foursome, and at the 5 minute mark the two A Graders made contact. At the bell Cantwell soloed off the front to a 20 second victory from Kane, who outsprinted Wild and Howard, with Mockridge furiously spinning downhill on his junior gears taking 5th. Fourteen year old Luke Anderson has recently moved up to C Grade, and on Sunday he had his first win in the higher grade, from Keith McCormack and David Sheppard, while mountain biker Brett Stevens was so dominant in his first ride in D Grade that it may also be his last. Congratulations to CATS rider Sara Carrigan, whose third place in the Australian Women's Time Trial Championships this weekend was her first senior Australian Championship medal. The first of many?
