Italian Ivan Quaranta (Alexia) has won the first stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi-Bartali, that commenced with a 158 kilometre flat circuit race in Ferrara. Quaranta beat Luca Paolini (Mapei) and Enrico Degano (Panaria) in the predicted bunch sprint, recording his second win this year after he won stage 7 of the Tour de Langkawi.

The race also saw the return of Fassa Bortolo's Alessandro Petacchi, who finished an impressive fourth after fully recovering from his fall in the Tour de Mediterranean.

Stage 2 tomorrow is the longest at 214 kilometres, between Cento and Montese.
