Champion off-road cyclist, Alison Dunlap (Boise Cascade) has won the third stage of the HP Women's Challenge, a 99.7 kilometre race from Stanley to Ketchum. Dunlap beat Canadian Lyne Bessette (Saturn) and race leader Jeannie Longo (Office Depot), with Germany's Trixi Worrack taking fourth place. The bonification gained by Bessette moved her to within 4 seconds of Longo's lead. Stage Three of the HP Women's Challenge took the remaining 89 riders over the infamous, 8700 foot Galena Pass and down into picturesque Sun Valley. Once again the temperatures were below the freezing mark, with snow on the surrounding mountains. After the previous day's break, race leader Longo had three more people who were a threat to her jersey in addition to Lyne Bessette. The first 25 flat miles to the bottom of the climb saw the field chasing a 1:15 gap to Intersport's Catherine Marsal. On the climb, it was Longo setting the pace with only Bessette and Caroline Alexander (Intersport) able to stay on her wheel. At the top of the climb a group of six formed including Bessette, Longo, Alexander, Germany's Trixi Worrack, Amber Neben and eventual stage winner Alison Dunlap. As this group came on the 30 km to go sign, they had 30 seconds on a chasing group containing Saturn's Anna Millward and Kimberly Bruckner, as well as third place Judith Arndt and Rasa Polikeviciute. Millward's group was caught by the main peloton with 8 kilometers to go. Although the front group of six was within sight, the chasing group was not able to close the gap. In the final meters it was Dunlap giving it all and earning a well-deserved stage win. Bessette was second over Longo. Moments later, Rossner won the field sprint for seventh. Tomorrow afternoon is the strenuous ElkHorn Circuit Race. However, prior to the afternoon's race, the women race a head to head time trial, where bonus seconds are given to the racer that beats her opponent.
