18th Hewlett Packard International Women's Challenge - 2.9.1USA, June 13-24, 20Main page Results Previous stage Stage 10 - June 21: Twin Falls - Mountain Home, 155.2 kmFrom the race office: The Saturn Team was victorious again today when Ina-Yoko Teutenberg battled the hot sun and heat for a grueling 97-mile race to take first in Stage 10 of the 18th Annual HP Women's Challenge, finishing in three hours, 51 minutes and 42 seconds. Placing second was Mirella van Melis of the Dutch National Team followed by Acca Due O Hewlett-Packard's Vera Hohlfeld who came in third. The 97-mile course is the longest of the 13-stage race and for almost 89 miles, there was very little activity with the group traveling as a whole. While there were a number of opportunities for breaks, very few of the riders took advantage of them in order to conserve energy. With five miles to go, Julie Young of the AutoTrader.com, Anna Millward of Saturn, and Chantal Beltman of the Dutch National Team made an attack and broke away. However, the trio didn't get far and were absorbed by the group after just two miles. The pace noticeably picked up though after Teutenberg won the last hot spot sprint and started to pour on the steam at the 500m mark. Following Teutenberg's lead, everyone began a mad dash toward the finish line traveling at an estimated speed of 40 miles-per-hour and finished as a group. Even with the heat, the riders kept to a consistent pace with the race finishing over 30 minutes earlier than the estimated time of four-and-a-half hours. Today's second place win for van Melis is the highest that the 22-year-old sprinter from the Netherlands has achieved so far in this race. Local Idaho rider Brooke Blackwelder of the Goldy's/Grove Street Place Team also had a great finish. Coming in at sixth place in Stage 10 and landing a fourth place finish in Stage 6's 80.2-mile race, Blackwelder has proven that she can go the distance. U.S. rider Jen Dial of the Office Depot Team is very happy about finishing in tenth place. Although this year's course to Mountain Home is new, Dial had a nasty crash on last year's stage race to Mountain Home, which put her out of the race entirely. Report by Giana Roberge/Saturn The tenth stage of the HP Women's Challenge was the longest of the Tour, with 155 kilometers raced. Mostly flat, with two smallish climbs, it was the amount of kilometers and the overbearing heat this late in the Tour that made the stage challenging. After a Saturn 1, 2 finish in yesterday's stage, the focus of the day for the Saturn Team was to protect Bessette's lead. Although there were early attacks, the Intersport Team, riding in defense of the Sprint Jersey, worked to keep the field intact so that Catherine Marsal could continue to gain points on second place Nicole Freedom. Thus, the field arrived to the 10 kilometer to go marker complete, and it looked like it would be another field sprint. However, a small break of three, including Saturn’s Anna Millward, Autotrader’s Julie Young and Dutchwoman Chantal Beltman, escaped and quickly opened a gap. Although Millward and Beltman were working, Young sat on, and the gap of ten seconds quickly began to dissipate. Acca Due O and the Dutch National Team joined forces bringing the threesome back to the bunch with five kilometers to go. The Saturn Team then worked to keep the field together, and in the final meters it was Ina Teutenberg zooming into the finish for the fourth Saturn Stage Win. Bessette still leads the HP Women’s Challenge by over three minutes. She also leads the Points Competition. The Saturn Team leads the Team Competition by nearly 20 minutes. Tomorrow's 16 kilometer Time Trial suits Bessette and Millward. It climbs for the first seven kilometers and then descends down onto the Firebird Speedway. However, with temperatures predicted to be well into the 90’s, it will be the weather more so than the terrain that is yet again the major factor.
