First Stage to Thor Hushovd
The first stage of Tour of Sweden was contested early on Wednesday.
The 12 kilometer stage was ridden in beautiful but windy weather. The
early overall leader of the race was Norwegian Thor Hushovd (Credit
Agricole) who won the stage with a time of 14.39.51.
Thor Hushovd made a strong impression, and was the best of the four
strong Credit Agricole riders. The big Swede Magnus Bäckstedt was second,
Australian Stuart O' Grady was third and Frenchman Frederic Finot was
sixth.
Thor Hushovd started early on the stage and had to wait a long time
before he could put on the yellow leader's jersey.
Stage 1b starts from Uppsala and finishes in Eskilstuna and covers
138 kilometers. This was Thor Hushovd's second stage win in Tour of
Sweden, as he also won the final stage to Göteborg in 1999. This season
he has won a total of five victories.
