Day 4 - July 1: Elite/Professional Men road race, 222 km

Gutiérrez too quick for Blanco and Garmendia

Top Spanish team ONCE-Eroski continued to maintain its domination and momentum on the Spanish scene, adding another Spanish title to the trophy cabinet. Today's winner was former world U23 TT champion José Iván Gutiérrez, who beat breakaway companions Santi Blanco (ibanesto.com) and Aitor Garmendia (Team Coast) in a three man sprint. He followed the excellent performance of teammate Santos Gonzalez, who managed to win the Spanish time trial championships on Friday.

The race was fast from the outset, with ONCE, iBanesto and Relax-Fuenlabrada, the principle teams driving the race. After 31 kilometres, US Postal's Jose Luis Rubiera abandoned due to a fall, and he was followed by Ignacio Cumbreño (Saunier Duval), who broke his collarbone and was taken to hospital.

After just 38 kilometres, a front group of 40 was formed, containing all the favourites. The teams of Kelme Costa Blanca, Relax, ONCE and ibanesto.com were well represented, along with individuals such as Angel Edo, Miguel Martín Perdiguero and Aitor Garmendia. By kilometre 155, their advantage had reached 3 minutes.

With 19 kilometres to go, Vicente Garcia Acosta (iBanesto) attacked, but was caught with 10 kilometres left. After some couter-attacks, the final break went with Gutiérrez, Blanco and Garmendia. The latter led out the sprint, and was easily passed by Gutiérrez and Blanco who took 1 and 2 respectively.
