Stage 1 - June 23: Carcassonne - Carcassonne, 171 km

Jens Voigt gains first stage

Picking up from where he left in the Dauphiné Libéré, German Jens Voigt (Credit Agricole) has won the first stage of the Route du Sud. The 171 kilomete stage from Carcassonne to Carcassonne was conducted in hot conditions, and Voigt finished ahead of Festina's Stéphane Auge and Big Mat's Alexei Sivakov.

The first stage started without Christophe Moreau, who decided to skip the Route du Sud after his win in the Dauphiné. After Patrice Halgand won the mountain sprint on the Col du Portel (km 53), the stage settled down until a group of 20 riders escaped with 30 kilometres to go.

Despite several attacks from Cofidis' Andre Kivilev, the leading group arrived together at the finish. Voigt won the sprint and took the orange leader's jersey.

Tomorrow there will be two stages: a 118 kilometre road stage from Carcassonne to Castres followed by a 17 km individual time trial in and around Castres.
