Dangerfield sets new UK 10 mile TT record

By Dave Taylor

Stuart Dangerfield (Camel Valley-Business Solutions Racing Team) took former world hour record holder and world pursuit champion Graeme Obree's national 10-mile record at the weekend. Dangerfield turned in the fastest ever recorded average speed in an event run under the regulations of the Road Time Trials Council when he won the Rutland CC event in Yorkshire, on Saturday evening.

Dangerfield covered the 10 miles (16 kilometres) in 18-19, taking eight seconds off of Obree's 1993 record, the same year the Scotsman took the hour record at Hanmer.

Midlander Dangerfield used a 54x12 and 54x11 gear for his ride which worked out at 32.75mph. The ride was part of Dangerfield's preparation for his defence on Saturday (30 June) of his national 25-mile title when his main rival will be Michael Hutchinson (Team MDT-Giant),  already winner of the 50-mile championship this season.

Dangerfield, who spent the winter racing and training in Australia, had not scheduled to get the record but his coach Dr. Gordon Wright said "we knew from Stuart's current form that given the right conditions the record was feasible."

*A slightly longer record also went at the weekend when national 24-hour champion Gethin Butler (Preston Wheelers) broke the Liverpool to Edinburgh record.

Butler covered the 210 miles between the two cities in 8-31-27 slashing   34-33 off of the previous record, set back in 1954 by Ken Joy.

Women's Team Race Series # 4

Penny Pot Lane Course, June 24 2001

The 4th event in the Women's Team Race Series was won by Diane Moss (SP Systems/Wightlink) in a tight sprint from Cherie Pridham (Team Letchworth) at the end of an active race.

The field left to cover 64 kilometres in summer sunshine on a challenging course with the main obstacle being the climb of Bland Hill which was also the finish point. It was the first time up Bland Hill at 8 miles covered, with Nikki Wheeler (Surrey league A) being dropped but she rode to finish the race.

The hill also set the pattern of the race, Joanne Kembery and Tracey Maund (Western Division) attacked the first time up and forced a clean break of 9 riders, Pridham was first over the hill but the leading group remained intact and settled down to cover the remaining distance.

Potbank, a sweeping downhill and over a small bridge, was another interesting feature of the course and each lap Di Moss was in the lead, a la 'Savodelli'. Pridham attacked twice and each time was caught by Moss but she would not work so the group came back together each time.

Into Pennypot Lane and Sarah Gill led for the first mile then Moss attacked as the leaders slowed and again Pridham was after her but no-one was allowed to get clear long enough. With these attacks the chasers fell further and further behind and it was clear that the race would be with the leaders. It was here that Karen Jeffrey (Surrey league A), lost contact and for mile after mile she could see the break but not get to them.

Into the final 2 miles and the climb of Bland Hill loomed, at the bottom Kembery attacked but was brought back then it was Pridham with Moss after her with Moss just getting the verdict after a good fast race. Winner Diane Moss said "The plan for the team today was to watch Tracey Maund and Joanne Kembery. When Cherie attacked I had to sit on her to keep the race together. Both Joanne and Tracey are a pleasure to race against, they always work and are so strong. Of course a few of the riders are missing today and that is a pity."
