Memorial Cup Drumm Memorial Cup, Currow, Co. KerryJune 24, 2001Clarke wins in a sprint finish By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday Independent
On the first passage through the town after 16 miles, Eddie O'Donoghue was in front but on the next occasion it was Timmy Barry who was leading. Going through for the third occasion it was Clarke who was in front. He had escaped the main pack and looked entirely comfortable as he pressed ahead. Going up the climb at Scarta Glin he was first over as he was a month ago in the FBD Milk Ras, but the chasers were closing in and memories must of that occasion must have been on his mind. In the Ras he was caught within miles of the finish in Castleisland, but yesterday he was not going to play second fiddle and when he went under the finishing banner "Currow welcomes cyclists" it was Raymond who was the victor. Pre race favourite Eugene Moriarty was very inconspicuous and finished in the main pack, maybe the championships are his priority for next weekend in Belfast. Men 1 R. Clarke (Derry, Classic Walls) 2.35.19 2 M. O'Loughlin (Carrick Cidona) 3 T. Hogan (Plantcote) 4 A. Buckley (Limerick CC) 5 P. Moriarty (Dublin Skip Hire) 6 J. McCarthy (Killarney CC) 1st Men B: M. Down - 120kmGallagher chases down break to secure winJune 24By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday IndependentKeith Gallagher of Orchard Wheelers proved best after 120 kilometres of racing on the West Down Circuit for the Noel Taggart Memorial Trophy yesterday, which has been slightly amended over the years because of traffic conditions. Not that it bothered the Orchard Wheeler who is also a promising u-23 cyclist. On the last of seven laps, Gallagher along with Brian Lennon caught a group of five who made what looked like a winning move on the fifth passage. At the end of the day the combined experience of Lennon and Gallagher was the difference that gave the duo the two top placing after a chase, which lasted several kilometres. In third place was the former Junior Tour (99) winner Brian Aherene
who since his move from Bray Wheelers to the Classic Walls (Derry) team
has started to show his true potential. Men - 120 km road race 1 K. Gallagher (Orchard Wheeler) 3.07.10 2 B. Lennon (St. Tiernans) 3 B. Aherne (Classic Walls) 4 G. Swinand (Usher IRC) 5 S.
