Known as the race of truth the rider is pitched against the clock rather than other competitors, there is no sitting on or hiding in the bunch until the sprint finish. Riders were competing in their age divisions over the 27.5km course, with the exception of the younger riders who rode the 18km course. Chris Brown repeated his effort of last year in winning the blue ribband men’s division in a very respectable time of 39:37:46. One of the best rides of the day was posted by Lou Palermo, 40:53:42, which was quick enough to take out second place in the men’s division. Palermo was probably spurred on by the fact that he was wearing Jono Halls Festina/Australian Champions skin suit. Several riders showed their consistency from last year, such as Frank Tortorici who was 2 seconds quicker this year in winning the masters 2 division. Patrick Delahunty improved his time by 10 seconds. Next weekend’s race is a 44.5km scratch race with group 6 providing the marshals. The Sunday morning Club training/recovery ride is starting to gain momentum again with 16 brave souls leaving opposite the Unanderra swimming pool at 7am for the ride south. The die hards turn off at Albion Park for the extended version of the ride via the hilly Jamberoo deviation while the less hardy riders continue on for their 70km loop around the lake. Any riders who wish to ‘tag’ are more than welcome. Forecast morning showers never eventuated, and all racing was conducted on dry roads under overcast skies. A through D Grades completed 2 laps of the 40km circuit, E Grade 1 lap, and the Juniors rode a out and back loop of 34km. A stronger A Grade field turned out today than had the past few weeks, but it was a one man show. Jonny Clarke, outstanding junior track rider and youngest son of multi-Australian Track Champion Hilton, has also turned his hand to the road for the last couple of seasons. The Under 19 rider is a real chance for selection to the World Road Championships on recent form, and he showed the bunch a clean pair of heals today. He set a tempo on the day's first climb that was only matched by 3 others: Justin Hogan, Charlie Bottero and another Trackie, Ben Jackson. The quartet rode together until the same climb on the second lap, where an attack from Clarke saw him shed his breakaway companions and ride 20km alone to a well deserved win. Cramps saw Jackson lose contact with the other members of the break, but he was able to hold off the bunch for 4th. Justin Hogan won the 2 up duel with Bottero to take 2nd on the day. Under instruction to race under control for the first 10km, the large B Grade bunch were surprised to see the C Grade bunch overtake them before the first climb despite the same instructions to the contrary to C Grade. Instead of separate races, the 2 races were doomed to be intertwined from that point. The windy conditions put paid to the usual attacks, and the bunch was content to keep the pace high to the base of the climbs. The high pace maintained on the first climb soon had the bunch strung out and many riders off the back. As the more experienced 'average' climbers have come to rely on, the pace slackens marginally on the rolling grades between the 2 main climbs, and those who keep the gap to the bunch manageable can usually chase back on - just in time for the steeper of the 2 climbs! Some of us hope the gun climbers don't catch on and start driving when they crest the summit in future. A similar pattern followed next time through the hills, and a substantially reduced bunch prepared for a bunch finish on the long flat road to the line. Newly promoted Martin Bole, attacked strongly twice; once before the final corner, and again just over 1km from home. Andrew Shannon was able to grab his wheel the second time, and as Bole faded, powered away to hold off the fast charging bunch, lead home by Warragul Vet, Geoff Thomson, from Russ Johnstone and Adam Pyke. All placings in C Grade went to the stronger climbers who stayed with the B Grade bunch. Alan Nelson hoodwinked the handicapper (strong enough to attack the bunch on the climbs) to be first C Grade rider home. Dotted throughout B Grade for the minor placings were Cam Winn, Michael Ford and Andrew Connolly. A disappointing race for most of the C Graders, and action has been promised to ensure the Grades remain separate in future. The smaller D Grade bunch rode the first lap and a half pretty much together, before 3 of the stronger riders went away in the hills, and fought out the finish. Chris O'Connor had the speed to take the win from Boon Chia and Veteran Ironman Champ Neil Gilbert (who was fresh enough to go for a run afterwards). Audrey Quick, in only her second ride with the club rode alone in unsuccessful pursuit, to finish 4th. Nathan Wise continues to impress. The 14 year old rode away from the E Grade bunch to record another convincing win. Chris Tassell narrowly failed to stay with him and finished 30 seconds behind. The bunch was lead home by first time rider Julie Pearce, ahead of another promising youngster Keiran Murphy. Richard Eppinger earned promotion from the Juniors with his win. Peter Johnstone took second from Sean Bourke and Michael Downing. Next week's racing is at Bayles for the Annual Pick-a Part Handicap over 90km. The start this time will be a few hundred metres down the road at the Fauna Park, with the finish at the Primary School as before. With nine bunches racing for forty kilometres, spread over fifteen minutes on a 1.5k circuit, the big question was not who was going to win, but could the officials keep track of what was going on? All grades were split in two (A1, A2, B1, B2, etc), other than E Grade, and each grade had to catch the grade below them, and then lap them, to be on the same lap and in contention for the finish. A challenging task for the riders, but even more so for the officials, first thing on a Sunday morning! It's pleasing to report that the race ran beautifully. The five E Graders soon got into a rhythm, but the ones to impress were the ladies D2 bunch of Carrie Smith, Karen Robinson, Sharon McDowell and Sarah Rota, who were able to hold off the D1 bunch until well into the second half of the race. The C1 bunch was working hard, and by halfway only John Mildenhall, Jerome Carrigan and Keith McCormack were left. However the real movers were B1, who had remained intact and caught and lapped C, D and E Grades with 7 laps to go and were sitting comfortably 100 metres behind A Grade, knowing that A Grade still had to catch them again to be on the same lap. Into the last corner it was like the charge of the light brigade with riders spread across the road, and it was Jim Burke with a desperate lunge on the line who got up by centimetres from Jeff Collier and Paul Carrigan. Fastest time went to A1 rider Riki Lanyon, from Troy Stacey. At the end of the day the riders went away happy, the officials breathed a huge sigh of relief, and the originator of the concept, John Mildenhall, rode off with a smile on his face. Thanks to the Super Cats group for their financial support. Due to the State Teams Time Trial Championships on July 8 the next CATS Invitational will be at Darlington Park on July 15. Results

A total of 60 riders faced the starter for this 55 kilometre event over the demanding Bald Mountain course. This course takes riders out through Chillingham to the foot of Bald Mountain and then across to Numinbah before returning through Chillingham again to the start/finish at Dulguigan. It also features a number of short but sharp hills which often help to sort out the race. A good field of 10 riders contested the A Grade event. Despite a fast pace and frequent attacks throughout the race the bunch was relatively intact coming into the home straight. Things became a little hectic during the dash for the line with several riders touching elbows and more in an attempt to gain a clear path to the finish. First home out this scrum was Brendan Egan with Ben Grothe in second place and the consistent Rob Lyte third for this week. B Grade had 16 starters and the race was on from the start. Paul Matthews, Graham Harvey and Paul Webb managed to get away at Chillingham on the way out and set an even faster pace. Their hard work however was not quite enough and they were eventually caught again at Crystal Creek on the homeward journey. A fall at this point brought down several riders including Lindsay Smith who was forced to retire as a result. On the run across the flats towards Dulguigan Paul Matthews set a strong pace in an attempt to set up the sprint for fellow club member Graham Harvey. Unfortunately it didn’t quite work with both Paul Webb and Paul Carrigan getting by Harvey with these three riders finishing in that order. A strong field of 19 riders took part in the C Grade race. Both a fast pace and constant attempts by various riders to get away were features of this event. Apart from dropping a few riders off the group all these efforts came to nought with the bunch largely intact with only a kilometre left to race. However, Brad O’Rourke jumped away at this point and, helped by the pack slowing to let a car past, stayed away to be first across the line. In the following bunch sprint ‘fast’ Freddie Mason was second with Frank Schirmer in his first ride in this grade for the season netting third place. D Grade also had a good group of 15 riders for their race. The pace was again relatively quick in this event with many riders sharing the work. A few riders were gradually whittled off the bunch which looked to be lining up for a sprint finish nearing the end of the race. With just 2 kilometres to go Chris Bonner and Dave Toyer broke away and established a small lead. Desperate riding by the rest of the bunch saw Bonner caught just short of the line whilst Toyer managed to hang on for the win. In the ensuing sprint ‘huff and puff’ Dennis Burger charged into second spot with Chris Bonner third over the line. Club members have recently competed in a number of open races in Queensland. In the Canelands Tour at Bundaberg Frank Schirmer won the criterium and was 5th in both of the road races whilst in the Barkly Challenge at Mount Isa Brendan Egan won the last road race and was 11th overall in this event. Well done to both riders! Racing next week is over the Flat Course as it will be the 5th Saturday in the month. Start time is 2.00 pm from Pat Smith Park at Dulguigan.
