PEP Results Touchstone Energy ClassicDay 1 - Plainview, Minnesota, June 16, 2001By Jason Waddell This race is a two day omnium event with a 104 mile road race for the men and a 68 mile jaunt for the women on Saturday. On Sunday a criterium aroundthe St. Paul capitol building will decide the final overall. The course was a 34 mile winding loop that went in and out of a river valley twice. That means we had two demanding climbs per lap and plenty of open field cross-wind sections to weed out the weaker riders. (Only around 30 men finished). There were many breaks that went away only to be reabsorbed so that someone else could attack. Being as it was really windy and the course hilly, all I saw was the back wheel of the guy in the gutter in front of me. I did however see the finish and Frank McCormack (Saturn) led out his breakaway companion Kirk O'Bee (Navigators)and held on to win by inches as O'bee made a late charge in the final meters. Glen Mitchell (Navigators) rolled in shortly after with Oscar Pineda (7up/Colorado Cyclist) also finishing solo. The sprint for 5th place was contested by about 10 riders and Ivan Dominguez (Saturn) got Todd Littlehales (Navigators) at the line. The women's race came down to a sprint between Stephanie Hannos (Verizon Wireless) and Ashley Kimmet (Saturn). Hannos jumped at 150 meters and held on to take the win. The men's race was basically a promenade around the course with no breakaway gaining more than a few meters on the field. Jonas Carney (Prime Alliance) who was in town for track nationals that were being run in Blaine won the field sprint. Franky Van Haesbrouke (Navigators) was second. Franky had to spend 29 hours in a plane in order to get from New York to Minneapolis and said that he was tired!!! He also relayed to me during conversation that he is getting sick of coming in second. So look out for Franky to hit it big this summer and fall.
