National 50 mile Time Trial Championship

Middlesborough, June 9, 2001

Defending champion Michael Hutchinson (Teaam MDT-Giant) retained the Road Time Trials Council national 50-mile championship near Middlesborough, on Saturday. Hutchinson took 1.41.58 to cover the 50 miles beating Julian Ramsbottom (Pete Read Racing) and Kevin Dawson (Pete Read Racing) into second and third places respectively.

A violent storm that included torrential rain and hailstones failed to deter Ulsterman Hutchinson and the other 60 competitors who braved the unseasonal conditions that hit part of the race course. The bottom half of the race circuit remained fine with a cricket match going on as riders headed back to the finish and freezing rain.

The women's title was taken by Julie Hooper (Team Letchworth) with Liz Milne (GS Strada-Rudy Project) and Caroline Cook taking the other podium places. Hooper, a silver medal winner in last year's 25-mile championship, returned to Britain in April after spending the winter training in Melbourne, Australia, with coach Peter Barrett.

Hooper, from Newport, South Wales, hopes her win will get her a place in the Welsh national squad for next year's Commonwealth Games, in Manchester.

Five Valleys National U23 Road Championships

Wales, June 10, 2001

Report

It was inevitable that in the end James Shaw would win a big one this year. Having endured a run of particularly bad luck in the early season Premier Calendar races and two near misses in the Under 23 National Series, it all came good for the 19 year old from Kidderminster in the National Under 23 Championship on Sunday.

Held over an 84 mile course in the hills of South Wales, the race had all the ingredients of a classic with a strong domestic field coming up against a talented contingent of continental based riders. In the end it was an eclectic four-man break which settled the race. Stourbridge CC's Shaw was joined by Taunton's Andrew Parsons (Team OSC), French-based Mark Baker (VC Cholet) and mountain biker Ian Wilkinson (Team Y2K) and the quartet were able to hold off the main field on the finishing circuit, before Shaw closed out Wilkinson in a tight sprint at the end.

2/3/J Road Race, June10, 2001

Oliver Wilson (Bradgate RT) outsprinted Jeff Snodin (Melton Olympic CC) to win the main event after the pair had been away since the 3rd lap of the 10 lap race. The pair were part of an 8 man break that dominated the early part of the race gaining over a minute on the bunch. The pair left this break with 4 laps to go as the rest of the break were swallowed up as the bunch split in two with 2 laps to go. The bunch then regrouped leaving the leading duo with only 15 seconds to spare with 5 miles to go. The pair held on to win with Oliver Wilson sprinting clear at the 200m flag to win by 2 lengths, the bunch were only 10 seconds behind with John Vardy (Ashfield RC) winning the sprint for 3rd place from veteran Martin Bunker (Nene Valley RT). First junior was Luke Kubicki (Rockingham Forest Wheelers) who took 6th place.

Veteran David Strickson (Witham Wheelers) sprinted clear of his two breakaway companions to win the morning event, leaving Steve Taylor (JC Cook RT) to take second place and Paul Young (BCF PM) narrowly avoiding being swallowed up by the sprinting bunch to salvage 3rd place.
