100 km (ending with a 23 km, above-category climb to 10,650 feet) by Jonathan Powell (ACA official)When riders embarked on the long trek up to Sandia Crest for a one-mile vertical vacation on the rocks, riders were treated with typical New Mexico sunshine and warm spring weather like Southern Italy. From the official's car in the Pro 1/2 race breakaway, one couldn't have had a better front row seat on arguably this year's most challenging New Mexico road race. The race started at 5,500 feet, at the entrance to Tijeras Canyon, home of the notorious Reaper Ride that local diehards use every Tuesday and Thursday for race training. Competition got off to a tough start, when D-Low's Tim Erwin, Ochsner's Brian Stangel, and KHSnm.com's Ken Zimmerman broke away only three miles in. The pack responded slowly, as riders had about 65 miles to negotiate bridging up to the former Master's National Champion Zimmerman and his colleagues. With KHSnm.com working to block for its team leader, and the rest of the peloton reserving their best efforts for the top of the climb, the group got almost three minutes ahead by the time they reached Cedar Crest. Through the rolling hills of North Hwy. 14, and all the way to the 24 percent grade of Heartbreak Hill, Erwin and Zimmerman did all they could to try and drop the resilient Stangel, who wouldn't be shaken. With the King of the Mountain $50 prize luring the riders into an adrenaline and lactic overload, the three maintained their three minutes on the pack, and Erwin danced up the hill first with Zimmerman showing signs of fatigue, and Stangel accepting his third-place spot up the first nasty climb of the day. As if the ride up to Sandia Crest - known for its vertical rock faces and roads - weren't difficult enough, Heartbreak Hill was just a warm-up for things to come. Through Cedar Grove the road turned south and started its loop back towards the Sandia Crest climb. Erwin took a drink and downed a box of Extran, and waited for Zimmerman and Stangel to catch back on. Within five miles, the three were caught by the pack, as the group headed west into a stout headwind. The group made several forays outside the double yellow line - enough to be warned twice by chief referee Jerry Kiuttu, and Kiuttu witnessed at least one rider advance while in the oncoming traffic lane. A short break by Darren Heinz of Team Ochsner was caught, while Heinz invariably got pounded by the New Mexico spring gusts coming from the west. Ochsner kept up the assault, sending Chandler Spears off the front with the persistent Zimmerman at his heels. Time trial specialist Zimmerman put the hurt on, eventually leaving Spears in No-Man's-Land, two minutes behind him, and two minutes ahead of the peloton. Through the Triangle intersection, Zimmerman blasted almost seven minutes ahead, with the rhythm of a two-time national champ. In his zone and in his element, the KHSnm.com anchor pushed up the mountain at a constant 12-15 mph, until the road turned especially steep at the Sandia Peak Ski Area. Zimmerman held on, but his lead was slipping as the mountain exacted its toll. (Meanwhile, a rogue motorist harassed the category three race by passing five or six cars at a time on the right shoulder, while trying to run some racers off the road. At the top, Forest Service officials and Bernalillo County sheriffs reported that they had detained the car and its three middle-aged passengers, who had been cited just the day before running cyclists off the road on the climb to Juan Tabo picnic ground on the other side of Sandia Mountain. Luckily, on race day, no one was injured, and all the seasoned cyclists stayed upright on the pavement.) At the eight mile mark (of 14) up the Crest climb, Zimmerman looked behind and saw Biciclub's Chris Brennan closing the gap on his solo bridge from the pack. Zimmerman cracked at 8,500 feet, and Brennan overtook him. The Colorado native looked fresh and strong. Brennan had reserved himself in the pack, while Zimmerman was attacking all morning, and he quickly moved ahead. On the second half of the climb, radio reports said that former Pan Am Games gold medalist Clay Moseley of KHSnm.com, and WMRC's Drew Miller were busting up the chase pack, while Zia Velo's Dan Doornbos, KHSnm.com's Todd Bauer, Erwin, and a few others were hanging on. Miller eventually broke free, working his way alone to within sight of Brennan at the 200 meter sign, while Brennan dug down deep to hold off the climbing specialist. Brennan put a few more meters between him and Miller, and pushed over the finish line in first place, followed by Miller. Doornbos blew away KHSnm.com riders Todd Bauer and Moseley (in that order) in a small group sprint for third, looking as if he were on a long, flat straightaway. The rest of the pack ambled in one at a time, and a long, challenging day was over, at 10,500 feet. After the race, Brennan was relegated one place by CR Kiuttu for his centerline violation back near Cedar Grove - which he protested - swapping first for second place, making for a hard lesson learned on a really painful day. Another successful race promoted by New Mexico Velosport and Bill Mclain, who kept it safe and paid out some great prize money - and sandwich cookies to boot. The BVBR is held on a 12.5 circuit with two challenging half mile climbs and a slight uphill finish. Thanks to CNYC's many sponsors - NYSEG, Delware Engineering, Velosophy Bike Shop of Cooperstown, Big M Midstate Supermarkets, Sporttech of Oneonta, Chenango Point Cycles of Binghamton, Sunburst Reflections, Pedros and Verge Cycling Apparel riders paid a $5 entry fee - raced for $500 in cash, got free tee-shirts and refreshments. The category 1-2-3 race came down to a 2 man sprint between CNYC's up and coming superstar - Mike Jones and Sean Nealy of Kissena. Mike Jones powered past Sean in a close finish. The 4-5 race was handily won by one of upstate NY's premier breakaway riders Rob Coapman. Rob suffered on the climbs for the first two laps but put the hammer down on the beginning of the third lap and came in solo. Brian Pashley led the field sprint in for CNYC. Ad Stabel made it 2 for 2 in 2001 racing on the CNYC race course. Today Ad beat out fellow breakaway companion Ernie Bayles. The Masters 35 plus field sprint was won by Bill Erickson. Aimee Vasse of Wheelworks and Independant Fabrications rode an amazing race to win the women's event. Her time gap after a long solo ride was in excess of 5 minutes. Rounding out the top 3 for the women were Sara Barker and Michelle Costello. Results from the Butternut Valley Bike Race brought to you by Central New York Cyclist (CNYC) and $5 A Day Racing Inc. Sincere apologizes to riders who were not recorded or may have been misplaced; the frequent downpours made getting the results difficult. In the women's race, Saturn's Ina Tuetenburg lapped the field twice on her way to victory, assisted by various teammates. Tuetenburg was part of an early break that contained her teammate Kristy Scrymgeour and Laura Van Gilder, the 2000 National Criterium Champion now riding for Verizon Wireless. This group stayed away and eventually lapped the field. Not content with this, once the trio caught the field, Tuetenburg teamed up with Petra Rossner to go off of the front again, eventually gaining another lap on the field shortly before the finish. Rossner was therefore on the same lap as Van Gilder and Scrymgeour, and took second place in the race, with Van Gilder 3rd and Scrymgeour 4th. The emphatic Saturn victory was an appropriate tribute to their former teammate, Nicole Reinhart, who won the 2000 edition of the Clarendon Cup. Before the women's race began, the field participated in a neutral parade lap and moment of silence in memory of Nicole. "Nicole would have turned 25 on the day of this year's race, so my family and I are particularly grateful for this tribute in her memory," said Nicole's father, Michael Reinhart. "We appreciate all the efforts to commemorate Nicole and to support the sport of cycling in such a positive light." The Clarendon Cup also hosted a Silent Auction that raised over $3,000.00 for the Nicole Reinhart Memorial Fund (www.nicolesbench.com). While the result of the women's race was never really in doubt, the menro race came down to a two-team shootout between a strong Mercury team and a resilient Navigators squad. In the end, it was Mercury's Jans Koerts who took the victory, with teammate Gord Fraser second, edging out the Navigator's Vasily Davidenko for third. The riders set a fast pace early in the event, with the pack well strung out after only 10 laps. The fast pace meant that there were no real successful breaks, and most attempts were chased down in short order. Several local riders showed themselves, notably Russell Langley (National Capital Velo Club/Spokes Bike Shop) going off of the front early. Also impressive was Snow Valley's Jonathan Wirsing, who got into a short-lived break with Mercury's Leon Von Bon, the reigning Dutch National Champion. Also aggressive in hunting primes was Roberto Gaggioli of the DeFeet team, a veteran rider with 199 victories to his credit. What of the U.S. Postal Service team? After all, this was their sponsor's event. The Posties put of a strong squad, headlined by Ghent-Wevelgem winner George Hincapie. The Postal team rode a controlled race, with Hincapie showing himself at the front and doing a lot of the work chasing any dangerous-looking attacks. In the end, however, it came down to a duel between Mercury and the Navigators. With eight laps to go the Navigators were organized up front, controlling the pace and looking to shut down any late attack. Things looked set for a Navigator's victory when it all came unglued in the last lap and a half. A fast pace became even faster, and the organized finish became a dog-fight ending in a field sprint from the last corner on the last lap. Mercury's Koerts and Fraser nipped Davidenko at the line in an extremely close and exciting race.
