Rob Calladine followed up last week's strong ride in the Dinnerville with a well deserved solo victory. The race started subdued with the bunch freewheeling along for the first 2km before Calladine, the oldest rider in the bunch, rode off the front with Austin Pitman. They held a gap for 10km but were brought back after a somewhat casual chase by the bunch. At the end of lap one Neil Williams surged off the front a few times and eventually got a small gap on the field, he was shortly joined by Peter Jones. As the bunch ascended the easy side of Hooker hill Tim Morris attacked the bunch and rode across to the break. Again the chase by the bunch was erratic, the three riders were able to stay away for all of lap two and part of lap three before the reluctant bunch eventually made the sacrificial commitment necessary to reel in the escapees. Hardy Lohse immediately counter attacked, closely followed by Calladine and the two opened up a handy lead. Lohse returned to the bunch leaving Calladine to attempt to ride the final 15km on his own. The bunch was unable to find anyone willing to chase the veteran, and as they coasted, Calladine was hammering on the pedals. With just 4km left in the race Jones and Morris made several attempts to break free but were closely marked. Calladine was tiring as the chasers closed in but he had done enough to secure the win. Jones won the bunch sprint for second from Marcus Arnold. Several of the usual B grade 'drivers' such as Lionel Covington were injured or absent form the race so it was up to the likes of Adam Hotchkis, Jason Johnson and Joe Pereira to do the lion's share of the work. There were no massive attacks just some very powerful riding that saw Hotchkis off the front on several occasions. Josh Wall was not his usual aggressive self as he was saving himself for a long Sunday ride with the Illawarra Academy of Sport bunch. On the third lap the bunch split and rejoined several times. As they lined up for the sprint it was between Hotchkis and Johnson. Hotchkis just won on the line and Wall came in third. There was a good size field in the C grade race and the riders were all of similar ability. This lead to a race with a good constant speed in which no one was able to escape and nearly everyone worked. The four riders who were insistent on keeping the pace up were Mal Moss, Patrick Delahunty, Peter Kelly and Alan McClelland. Dennis Fitzgerald made his way to the front on every climb and controlled the bunch so that there were no damaging attacks. With 3km to go Delahunty attacked with Rebecca Borgo on his wheel. They were brought back by the bunch as they jostled for a good position in the sprint. McClelland took the initiative and the element of surprise and led the sprint out with 400m to the finish line. Although Fitzgerald put in a concerted effort he could only narrow the gap down to half a wheel. Moss finished strongly to take out third place. Jack Laajoki eventually wore Max Baker down and rode in for a solo victory in the D grade race. Next Saturday's race is round two of the Interclub series and is being hosted by the Caesar's Illawarra Club. The race will start at 2:15pm from Dapto High. With just on a hundred entries it is shaping up as a great race. Anyone that is able to assist on the day should contact Garry Doughty on 42715533.

This course is 56 kilometres long and features a number of challenging climbs including Bald Montain and Tyalgum Hill. The limit group only had a start of 23 minutes this month on the scratch bunch with five other groups starting between these times. By the half way point at the top of Tyalgum Hill (Dump Hill) one rider from the limit group, R. Faulkner, had broken away and established a lead of several minutes over the following riders. However, some spirited riding by the 15 minute group saw them reel in most of the earlier riders apart from Faulkner by the time they reached Bald Mountain again on the return leg of the race. The race was on from here and the high pace on the return leg from Chillingham took its toll with a number of riders dropping off the pack. Determined riding by both the chopping block and scratch bunches managed to bring the race together again with about 5 kilometres to go and it was a dash for the finish line. Nonetheless a great ride by R. Faulkner from the limit group saw him still holding a lead of about 20 seconds coming into the finish. Unfortunately he didnt realise that there was a left turn to reach the finish line on Urliup Road and he rode straight on towards Tumbulgum! The continuing high pace saw the bunch start to splinter over the last kilometre or so of the race with a number of sprints deciding the subsequent placings. Racing next week is over the picturesque Crystal Creek course and will start promptly at 2.00pm. All riders are asked to be on time to help ensure the smooth running of this event. for Carnegie Caulfield members only, due to a directive from the State's
governing body, CycleSport Victoria, to encourage entries in a Two Day
Tour. Consequently, numbers were down somewhat on the past few weeks.
