Hammond wins in Gullegem

There 102 starters today for the 170 km Kermis race in Gullegem (near Kortrijk). Amongst them Mattan, Farazijn, Dierckxsens, Peers, Jo Planckaert, Verstrepen, 17 Collstrop-Palmans, a lot of Landbouwkrediet-Colnago and Vlaanderen-T Interim, good old Etienne De Wilde, the complete Zetelhallen group and six HSBC riders from South Africa.

From the first to the 14th lap (of the 17 laps), three riders remained clear of the bunch, Goncaras (Zetelhallen), Meirhaeghe (Landbouwkrediet) and Eric Declercq (Collstrop-Palmans). They were caught with 30 km to go. Then an attempt with Mattan, Jeremy Maartens (HSBC), Farazijn, Roesems, Rondelez, Jan Verstraeten, Hammond, Staf Scheirlinckx, Masschelein went and was caught at the beginning of the last lap. Hammond, Mattan and Roesems countered and Hammond won ten metres clear of Mattan and 10" clear of Roesems. Then 20 seconds later there was a big bunch sprint won by Gorik Gardeyn (Lotto).
