Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic - NEUSA, June 28-July 1, 2001Main Page Results Previous StageStage 2 – June 29: Aubuchon/Gudden Circuit Race, 125 km/64 km (M/W)Wohlberg holds on as Mercury go 1-2By Giana Roberge, Saturn Cycling team The second stage of the Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic was a 3.1-mile circuit held in the outskirts of downtown Fitchburg. The 25 lap men's race started off at a good pace with early attacks from the Navigators Team. Then it was the Mercury Team trying to launch one of their race contenders. The Saturn Team was determined not to let anyone dangerous escape and brought race leader Wohlberg back to the threatening breaks. Although the 100 feet of climbing per lap took its toll at the back of the 200 plus men's field, at the front the race stayed together and it seemed that a field sprint was inevitable. However, with three to go Saturn's Soren Peterson slipped off the front and maintained a 20 second gap on the chasing Mercury squad until the last mile. The final time up the hill it was the Mercury Team leading the way, with Baden Cooke claiming the win over his Mercury Teammate Henk Vogels. Third was 7-UP’s Charlie Dionne. Although not on the podium in the finish Wohlberg maintained his race lead over Adham Sbeih and will wear the Orange Race Leader’s Jersey in tomorrow's road race.

Saturn Cycling Team Today's race was a circuit of 5 km which we had to do 13 times. The main feature of the race was the final 750m steep pinch to the finish line each lap. Going into the race we had the upper hand so we just had to watch for any moves made by Genevieve and the Rona team. Surprisingly the race was quite uneventful in terms of attacks, so we just tried to lead Lyne, Anke and Suzanne into the climb in the best possible position. Both Suzanne and Lyne were feeling great up the climbs which was perfect. Genevieve, Laura Van Gilder and Naomi (Ren) Williams were all fighting for mountain points throughout the race and Genevieve now holds the mountain jersey going into tomorrow's stage. In the final sprint for the finish Genevieve won over Lyne, followed by Van Gilder. Lyne, of course still holds the leader's jersey.
