Recent winner of the Midi Libre, Iban Mayo (Euskaltel-Euskadi) has won the wet 11th edition of the Classique des Alpes, 175 kilometres between Aix-les-Bains and Chambery. The Spaniard beat perennial podium finisher, Lance Armstrong (US Postal) and Russian Pavel Tonkov (Mercury) by 1'12 after a long escape.

23 year old Mayo had attacked on the Grapillon pass (km 55), together with Kelme's Oscar Sevilla, but dropping the latter on the climb of the Cucheron pass. As the rain continued to fall, Mayo continued to ride away from the next group, gaining up to 4 minutes with 25 kilometres to go.

Behind him, Pavel Tonkov attacked with Lance Armstrong on the Col du Granier, and the two attempted to catch Mayo in the final kilometres. They could not do so. Armstrong crossed the col with under half a minute's lead to Tonkov, but Tonkov regained it on the descent which was quite dangerous.

Iban Mayo took it very carefully, but eventually the young Euskaltel rider scored another important victory, riding across the line in Chambery with over a minute to spare after being away for 120 kilometres. Armstrong sprinted around Tonkov for second place, with Félix Rafael Cardenas (Kelme) coming in alone at 2'27.

Laurent Jalabert (CSC) was also prominent near the front, but suffered a puncture in the finale and finished 23rd, 11'34 down, describing himself as "cooked" after the race.

"France makes me successful," said Mayo after the race. "I did not know that Armstrong had attacked, I thought it was a group."

"The weather was cold and I did not know the climbs very well. It was very hard. This win is very significant for my career. The Dauphiné will be something else. Eight days is long."

Second placed Lance Arsmtrong said that "I wanted to test myself. I am content with this result. The race was beautiful but the tough conditions changed the tactics. The Tour de France is still far away. I will ride the Tour de Suisse, I want to become lighter there."
