16th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.4Canada, June 18-24, 2001Main page Results Previous stage Stage 6b - June 23: Saint-Georges Criterium, 60 kmKlasna wins nullified stageSaturn's Trent Klasna has won the evening criterium of the GP de Beauce that marked stage 6b of the race. However due to poor weather conditions it was shortened and did not count for the overall GC. The threatening rain clouds finally opened up on the downtown St. Georges criterium course as the riders prepared for the race. Unfortunately, as the initial lap was completed the entire peloton came to a stop as they completed the lap. The professional riders were concerned about the road and weather conditions, as about 20 riders had already fallen on the slick pavement. They stopped in a show of solidarity as this stage is typically fast and aggressive, and bad luck in these conditions would surely affect the final outcome of the stage race. The race officials and the organization agreed, and the event was shortened to 30 km and it would not count toward the overall classification. After about 10 laps of easy riding, those not scared of the rainy conditions began to race for a stage win. With two laps to go Saturn’s Trent Klasna made his move from what was left of the main peloton of about 25 riders and bridged across first to a group of three then finally to the front breakaway of four on the last lap up the hill. The group splintered on the hill, and going through it, Klasna caught the last rider with half a lap to go, out sprinting him for the win. Tomorrow's stage is going to be a grueling test for the top contenders and may turn the overall upside down as the riders tackle 15 laps on a 10.95 kilometer circuit course that includes a 3 kilometer climb with 8-10% grades.
