Vainsteins' pupil wins stage 2, Solari takes the pink jerseyThe second stage of the Giro d'Italia held today in Este, near Padova over a tough 153 kms, was full of excitiment. Latvian rider Andris Reiss (Sintofarm) a neighbour and friend of current world champion Romans Vainsteins won the stage, beating Uzbekistan rider Sergey Krushevski after the two had broken away on the final climb of the stage the Este Caleone, just 5.6 kms from the finish. The win by Reiss came after a aggressive stage with saw attack after attack right from the start. Race leader Patrizio Gambazza struggled to control all the attacks an finished behind the leading riders, losing the leader's pink jersey. Italian Gianluca Cavalli of the Vezza Brunero team was initially declared the new race leader by the time keepers. However after controlling the stage result and the time gaps, Luca Solari of the Sanpellegrino-Bottoli team was declared the official new race leader. Unfortunately he had not been able to pull on the jersey on the podium and only found out he was leader after getting to his hotel. Tomorrow is the third stage of the Giro d'Italia Elite. It will be held in the Vicenza area, starting from Sandrigo and finishing in Breganze. Race distance: 144.8 km with 12 laps of a 11.5 km circuit between Breganze and Fara Vicentino.
