DL/DH MTB World Cup #4 & XC #5 - CDMDurango, Colorado, USA, July 14-15, 2001Program
Day 1 - July 14: Downhill, 2.56kmDouble triumph for French starsBy Rob Karman Under overcast skies with intermitten rain, French racers Mickael Pascal (Be-One) and Anne-Caroline Chausson (Volvo/Cannondale) triumphed in the 4th round of the UCI World Cup Downhill. Held at Durango Mountain Resort in the San Juan Mtns 20 miles north of Durango, CO, the course twisted down 1.6 miles/2.57kms with several steep drop offs made treacherous by the wet conditions. The light sprinkles gave way to a torrential downpour just before the last 4 men left the starthouse and all but ruined ther chances on the day. Among the victims of the rain was multiple World Champion Nicolas Vouilloz (Vouilloz Racing) who would eventually finish 38th, 13 seconds off the pace of his countryman Pascal. Bootes tried to regain Lopes after the second large bank turn of the course, but in doing so went too fast into a set of double jumps and lost what ever time he had gained back. Lopes cruised ahead through the six pack rythm section and the rock garden, then sailed high over the last two doubles to take the win with style. Cedric Gracia bested Eric Carter in the consolation round for third. Donovan easily beat Llanes to add another World Cup victory to her palmares before her planned retirement at the end of the season. Chausson beat Jonnier for third. Action continues tomorrow at Fort Lewis College with the men's and women's World Cup Cross Country.

From the gun it looked to be another Specialized dominated podium with Barbara Blatter leading Alison Dunlap (GT) and her Specialized teammate Caroline Alexander. Mary Grigson was working her way up from a bad start to pass through the 4.5KM mark in 8th place. 2.5KM later she had worked her way up to 6th while Alexander had passed Dunlap and the Specialized pair worked together to create a gap. When the leaders came back around for their second of three laps on the 10.8KM loop, Grigson had moved into 4th, just ahead of her teammate Chrissy Redden, while the top three remained unchanged. Over the next 3.5KM Grigson passed both Dunlap and Alexander and loomed only 12 seconds behind Blatter who had not seen anyone's back tire since the gun went off. Local favorite Ruthie Matthes was also moving up through the pack and was just ahead of Redden in 5th place. Halfway through the third lap Grigson turned the tables and now had the same 12 second lead that Blatter had enjoyed shortly before. She extended that lead to the finish for a winning margin of 1:05 over Blatter while Alexander held on for third. Dunlap ran into trouble and faded to 7th leaving 4th place to Matthes to much delight of the crowd. Whereas Grigson was never far from the top 10, Absalon was buried much deeper within the field. He also had a bit of mechanical luck on his side, or rather his competitors didn't. Pre race favorites Roland Green (Trek/VW), Christoph Sauser (Volvo/Cannondale) and Cadel Evans (Volvo/Cannondale) were all victims of depleted air from their tires. Sauser double flatted within 10 mins of the start and retired early while Green led for most of the race until a slow leak began on the 3rd of four laps, eventually draining both of his CO2 cartridges. Evans seized the opportunity afforded by Green's misfortune and surged ahead of Absalon only to fall victim to the same dreaded fate. The race was animated early on by Bas Van Doren (Specialized) who towed a willing Green off the front with him on the first lap. Green took over the pace making while Evans and Roel Paulissen (GT) chased 15 seconds behind. At this point Absalon was buried somewhere in the low 20's on the leader board and wasn't considered a factor, but steadily started moving up with every passing opportunity presented to him. Halfway into lap two, Green had pulled away from Van Doren while the chasers constantly traded positions. Green looked to be on his way to another World Cup victory as his lead steadily grew to over a minute on lap three while Evans bridged to Van Doren and an organized chase followed led by defending World Cup Champion Miguel Martinez (Full Dynamix). Then disaster struck Green for the second time in as many weeks. Round 4 at Grouse Mountain last week ended in similar fashion with Green losing the lead and the win to Sauser because of a flat tire on the last lap. Fate was once again not on his side and Absalon took over the lead after having charged by a third of the field. Evans attacked and dropped the young Frenchman on the climb, but the dreaded hissing sound and squishy feel ended his victory bid as well.
