Fenland Clarion grass meeting

Biggleswade, July 14, 2001

Heavy rain saw a delayed start to the Fenland Clarion grass track meeting held in conjunction with the Biggleswade Sports Meeting. The 30 minute delay was good news for Andy Stuart (Mildenhall CC), who arrived without any handlebars for his bike! A quick trip home to Hitchin and a rapid return up the A1 saw him return with moments to spare before the first event.

Despite his rushed preparation Stuart went on to place in four of the five events, winning three and taking second in the fourth, to take home the lions share of the GBP150 prize list.

The remainder of the prizes were snapped up by riders from the promoting Fenland Clarion and Team Welwyn.

Team Keyne-Trek National Youth Circuit Race Series

Milton Keynes, July 15, 2001

By Bob Varney, Race Director

Team Keyne-Trek, the Milton Keynes based youth development squad, hosted the third round of the inaugural BCF-BSCA National Youth Circuit Race Series at the epeopleserve Training Centre, in the Kents Hill area of the city Sunday 15 July. One hundred of the country's finest young racing cyclists descended onto the city for a day of fast and aggressive riding in all of the five age related races.

Local rider Daniel Murphy (TeamKeyne-Trek) was unfortunate to crash halfway through the first race but managed to continue for third place in the Under 8 category, dropping one place on the overall table to third. Tom Gallacher from Welwyn Wheelers was a clear and stylish winner extending his overall lead in the series. In the Under 10 race, local honours were on the shoulders of Callum Thompson from the promoting Team Keyne - Trek squad. Callum, second in the opening round at Sutton started strongly, but tailed off to finish in 8th place. Victory for the third successive time in the series went to young Welsh star Lucy Richards from the Maindy Flyers, based in Cardiff. There were strong performances from a trio of Lea Valley Youth riders with John Price, Joe Nash and Joe Perrett in 2nd, 4th and 5th receptively.

In the 16 lap Under 12 race Team Keyne-Trek fielded a four man team of Tom Varney, Matthew Stannard, Julian Cox Roberts and Sam Arnold. A break away of four riders formed early in the race of Mark McNally, series leader Luke Rowe, Tom Crawforth and Peter Kennaugh. With no local riders in the front group it was Tom Varney who was first to react bridging across to the break to make the front group five strong. Varney was unable to sustain the pace of the leading quartet and was distanced during the later stages of the race to finish in fifth place. Mark McNally (Liverpool Century) clipped off on the last lap to win alone with series leader Luke Rowe in second to consolidate his overall lead. Julian Cox Roberts finished a fine 11th place with Matthew Stannard in 12th after suffering from mechanical problems. Sam Arnold unfortunately did not finish after dropping out just before half distance. There was a strong performance from the visiting Isle of Man squad with Peter Kennaugh in fourth and Scott Flynn in sixth place.

Ian Stannard (Team Keyne-Trek) was leading the overall tables in the Under 14 section and was expecting a tough battle with his close friend and rival Jon Mozley (Crattoni Helmets). However, Tom Smith from C.C. Cardiff, showed them both a clean pair of heals with a perfectly executed last lap attack that he sustained to the finish to win alone in fine style. Mozley won the sprint for second with Philip Gough (Portswood Cycles) piping Stannard for third. Mozley and Stannard now share the lead in the series and there close rivalry will continue throughout the remainder of the season. Richard Hepworth (Batley C.C) crashed just after half distance, took a lap out before rejoining the race, only to be pulled back by the race commissaire for a technical irregularity. Hepworth finished in 11th place.

In the 'blue riband' under sixteen event a full field of thirty riders contested a fast and furious race with the race winning break forming as early as the second lap with Tom Walters (Beeston RC), Ben Crawforth (Palmer Park Velo), Geriant Thomas (C.C. Cardiff), Marc Wilmot (Hillingdon Slipstreamers) and Andrew Gough (Portswood Cycles) breaking away from the already disintegrating bunch. Peter Bissell (Welwyn Wheelers) spotted the danger and counter attacked from the bunch in lone pursuit. Gough found the pace of the front group too hot to handle a dropped back to a chasing group of nine riders being driven along by local hope Sam Varney (Team Keyne-Trek). The front group split under pressure from Walters and he and Thomas rode away from Crawforth and Wilmot. Bissell clawed his way across to these two but the three could not make any impact on the leading duo. Thomas won a close sprint from Walters with Crawforth in third. Local honour was upheld with Varney sprinting into a fine eigth place. James Stringer and Chris Murphy (both Team Keyne-Trek) both rode strongly in the third group to finish in 16th and 18th positions to register there first points in the national series.
