Stage 8 - July 10: Nonantola - Nonantola, 102 km

Zocca like Cipollini, four wins at the Giro

Stahurskaia crashes but promises to attack

Another sprint finish at the Girodonne, with another win for Italian Greta Zocca. The rider from Vicenza who rides for the Gas Sport Team took her fourth stage win in Nonantola, equalling the four stage wins of Mario Cipollini at the men’s Giro d’Italia.

Zocca beat Katia Longhin and Australian Rochelle Gilmore with another powerful and dominating sprint."This is a great season for me," Zocca said. "I’ve won nine races, including four Giro stages and the Italian title. I have to thank my team mates for this success.

They were incredible today just as they have been every time I’ve won."

Even though Zocca won, it was not an easy stage for the Gas Sport Team. Race leader Zinaida Sahurskaia crashed with three laps to go, forcing the whole team to work hard to catch back up to the bunch.

"All’s well that ends well," Zahurskaia said afterwards. "I’m fine. I have to thank my team mates for getting me back on so quickly and the other riders for being so sporting. Nobody tried to advantage of my crash."

The pink jersey’s morale is clearly high. "I’m going to attack tomorrow," she said. "I won’t wait for my rivals to cause me problems."

Tomorrow’s stage is much awaited. Starting from Ora near Bolzano in the Dolomites at 12:00, the stage finishes in the mountains at Vetriolo Terme at 3:00pm.

After the the climbs of the Cembra and Sevignano (which are two KOM sprints), the riders will face the final 12km climb which goes up to 1441m to Vetriolo Terme.

The ninth stage is the first of three stages for the climbers which will probably decide the Giro, before the final time trial on Sunday from Cornuda to Valdobbiadene.
