Stage 2a - July 3: Capo d'Orlando - Adrano, 107 km

Zinaida Stahurskaia wins alone in Adrano

Current world road race champion Zinaida Stahurskaia (GAS Sport Team) won the first half-stage from Capo d'Orlando to Adrano over 107km of the second day of the Giro d'Italia.

The Belorussian rider won alone in Adrano after attacking from a front group of 16 riders which included all the race favourites. She took the pink jersey from Greta Zocca, who won yesterday in Milazzo. Second was Italian Rosalisa Lapomarda (Rosa dei Venti) who won the group sprint ahead of Nicole Brandli (Edilsavino), Diana Ziluite (Accadueo Lorena) and Fabiana Luperini (Edilsavino) ten seconds behind Stahurskaia.

The first climb of the stage and of the Giro, the Portella dello Zoppo which went up to 1284 m, caused a clear selection, showing who would have a chance of winning the Giro. All the favourites were in the chase group which formed behind early attacker Severine Desbouys (Gas Sport Team), who attacked at the start of the climb and was only caught 40km from the finish.

"Winning the stage and taking the pink jersey wearing the rainbow jersey is a dream come true," the winner said. "I saw that Luperini and Brandli were going to attack and so I went first. I dug deep and made it to the finish alone. I'm in great shape. Before the start of the Giro everybody talked about Somarriba and Luperini but there are a lot of riders who can win the Giro. I'm one of these and I wanted to show it immediately."

This afternoon in Catania there is the second half-stage of the day. It is a flat 56km circuit race along the sea front and so is not expected to change the new overall classification.

Tomorrow Wednesday July 4, The Girordonne leaves Sicily after the third stage from Biancavilla to Messina. The stage starts on the slopes of Etna before passing through the holiday resorts of Randazzo, Liguaglossa, Giardini and Taormina for a total of 126km.
