Day 1 - July 25: Time Trials

Bessette takes title by 10 seconds

By Daniel Larouche, Team RONA

On a day marred by car accidents (two cyclists were injured seriously enough to be sent to hospital after collisions with cars), Lyne Bessette (Saturn Timex) took the Canadian national time-trial title today, speeding through the 27.6 km with a time of 38.41 at an average speed of 42.81 km/h.

Geneviève Jeanson (RONA) finished second, 10 seconds behind Bessette, and British Columbia's Beah Goldstein (800.com) came third, 15 seconds behind the new Canadian champion.

The race took place in hot, windy weather on an urban circuit through the streets of Dieppe, near Moncton, New Brunswick.

André Aubut, Team RONA's directeur sportif, had trouble hiding his frustration, which wasn't primarily caused by Jeanson's second-place finish. Jeanson was held up several times by cars, but the main source of his frustration centered on Amy Jarvis, another RONA cyclist who was hit by a car and injured severely enough to be rushed to the emergency room of the hospital. She will undergo an operation tonight for multiple injuries to her right thigh, including deep lacerations.

"It's entirely unacceptable that participants in a national time-trial championship should have to break in mid-race and almost come to a full stop to avoid cars right in the middle of the track," he fumed after the race. I'm furious that this kind of thing has to happen to us, to Team RONA, naturally, but that's not the problem. The problem is that the safety of Canada's best cyclists, of all the top cyclists in the whole country, be not properly ensured in a race of this scope."

The race organizers told the media that the number of volunteers was sufficient to ensure safety.

The problem was the course itself, which went down Dieppe's main street, a very busy, four-lane road. This road was not closed to traffic: only one lane was reserved for the race, blocked off by plastic markers and guarded by volunteers. But despite all their best intentions, the volunteers (teenagers, for the most part) could not control the flow of the cars. The traffic was heavy enough to disrupt the competition, with cars coming in and out of driveways along the entire main street.

Luckily not all of the cyclists came up against the same difficulties. Team RONA's Mélanie Nadeau and Raphaële Lemieux had no major problems. But in addition to Jarvis colliding with a car, both Manon Jutras and Geneviève Jeanson had to brake several times when cars crossed the track or even made a stop right across the corridor reserved for the cycling competition.

Jeanson's main traffic problems arose in the second 13.8-km lap. After completing the first lap in 19'04, leading Leah Goldstein (800.com), Lyne Bessette and Sandy Espeseth (Intersports) by 4, 8 and 23 seconds respectively, Geneviève Jeanson took 43 seconds longer to complete the second lap, during which Bessette made up 18 seconds on Jeanson. It was during this second lap, when she was speeding along at over 50 km/h, that Jeanson was obliged to come to an almost complete halt, start back up at less than 10 km/h and then work to regain speed, only to have to brake again and start all over.

"Several times during the race," explained Manon Jutras, "I had to brake because a car was crossing the track in front of me, either going into a driveway or coming out."

"I'm not trying to excuse myself," said Jeanson after the race, "no more today than any other day. I never do. But I'll never know how this race would have ended if it hadn't been for those two cars blocking my way."

"This is the second year in a row that we've had problems with the Canadian national-time trials," concluded André Aubut. "And this year it is even worse than last year: there are serious injuries. These accidents could have easily been avoided. What are they waiting for? For someone to be killed before they decide to hold the races on proper courses, with a secure perimeter?"

Saturn report

Lyne Bessette and Eric Wohlberg added to the collection of national titles for Saturn Cycling Team members on Wednesday by winning the women's and men's Canadian individual time trial races.

Bessette bested the sport's newest sensation, 19-year-old Genevieve Jeanson, by 10 seconds over 26 kilometres, finishing with a time of 38.41 to Jeanson's 38.51. Third was Leigh Goldstein at 38.51.

Wohlberg took the men's 40 km race in 48.05 over Svein Tuft at 49.56. Roland Green was third at 51:08. Michael Barry also raced in the event; his results were not available as of the time of this release.

Earlier in the season, Anna Millward took the Australian time trial crown while Kimberly Bruckner and Trent Klasna won the U.S. time trial championships. Bruckner went on to win the American road race title as well. Bessette, Wohlberg and Michael Barry will also compete in the road race.
